Daniel von Bargen (born June 5, 1950 in Cincinnati , Ohio , † March 1, 2015 in Montgomery , Ohio) was an American actor .

Life

Daniel von Bargen began his career in Broadway productions . In film and television he mostly played policemen or officers. He became known for his role as Commander Edwin Spangler in the television series Malcolm in the Middle , as Air Force General Ken Shannon in The West Wing - In the Center of Power , Amy in Just in Case as Judge and Sheriff Cooley in O Brother, Where Kind thou? - A Mississippi odyssey . In addition, he played in the 1998 teen - horror film The Faculty a teacher. He also starred as Kruger in Seinfeld and Jacob Steven Haley in The X-Files: The FBI's Scary Cases .

On February 22, 2012, the US website TMZ.com reported that von Bargen, who had severe diabetes, shot himself in the temple in an apparent suicide attempt. He then made an emergency call himself, whereupon he was taken to the hospital by an ambulance service. On March 1, 2015, von Bargen died of complications from his diabetes at the age of 64 in Montgomery, Ohio.
