Thank you is the title of a song by German soul and R&B singer Xavier Naidoo . It is a single from his third solo album Telegram for X and was released in July 2006. Naidoo wrote the songafter the 2006 World Cup , after the German national soccer team had failed in the semi-finals, and "thanked" the team with it. The title was initially only to be published on the Internet, but due to the strong demand it was also sold as a maxi CD and subsequently stayed at the top of the German single charts for five weeks.

content

In the semi-finals of the 2006 World Cup in Germany, the German national team failed 2-0 after extra time against eventual world champions Italy . The World Cup in their own country sparked enthusiasm among many viewers and is referred to in retrospect as a "summer fairy tale" . Naidoo sums up the team's performance with the song and thanks them ( "Thank you very much for that, it touched us deeply, [...] credit where credit is due" ).

In addition, with various passages in the text he explicitly refers to special events during the tournament, for example the quarter-finals , which Germany won on penalties against Argentina ( “Man, you beat Argentina after a long game” ), and the lost semi-finals ( “The July 4th just wasn't your best day ” ).

In the main part of the song, Naidoo dedicates a four-line verse to each player in the squad , which highlights special characteristics or actions of the respective player during the World Cup. (Example: "In front of the black eye was the injured arm; But Germany's first goal was scored by Philipp Lahm" - in relation to Philipp Lahm's first goal in the opening game against Costa Rica.)

The music video shows excerpts from games of the German team at the World Cup.

success

The song stayed in the German single charts for a total of 15 weeks; of which five weeks in first place. In Austria (34th place; eight weeks) and Switzerland (100th place; one week) the song was not nearly as successful. He was also awarded the gold record for over 150,000 sales of the single .
