Danny Tshindind Kassap
Danny Tshindind Kassap (born June 24, 1982 in Lubumbashi , Zaire , † May 2, 2011 in Toronto ) was a Canadian athlete who came from the Democratic Republic of the Congo .
Life
In 2001, the long-distance runner came to Canada to take part in the Jeux de la Francophonie . He applied for political asylum and settled in Toronto, where he began training at the University of Toronto Track Club . On July 6, 2003, he set a record in Hamilton with 28: 57.28 min in the 10,000-meter run for the DR Congo.
In 2004 he won the Toronto Waterfront Marathon and in 2005 he finished third in the Ottawa Marathon .
In 2008 he received Canadian citizenship, which allowed him to compete in international races. After finishing 15th in the London Marathon, he started the Berlin Marathon in the fall . There he collapsed after five kilometers. By immediately initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation , among others, by means of a defibrillator one was sudden cardiac death averted. The cause was determined to be ventricular fibrillation , which had been triggered by an undetected viral myocarditis . Since the health insurance only covered part of the cost of 12,000 euros, his fellow athletes from the University of Toronto started a fundraising campaign, which was also successful thanks to the support of the Berlin Marathon.
After a recovery period of eight months, he took part again in a five-kilometer run, which he won, and completed a half marathon in 2010. In early May 2011, Kassap died at the age of 28 in Toronto's Sunnybrook Hospital from previously unexplained causes.
