Movie content

The Jewish lawyer David Weinberg ( Alan Rickman ) and his coming from a wealthy family, younger woman Alexis Chandler Weinberg ( Polly Walker ) are on a foggy, rainy road on the way to their private island in Maine . You are pressed for time because you want to reach the last ferry . Suddenly, Alexis sees something on the side of the road and David reluctantly stops. An injured young man ( Norman Reedus ) lies on the side of the road . David wants to call the police, but the boy refuses. The couple takes him with them. David tries in vain to persuade him to go to a hospital for a check-up. Because of this incident, they miss their ferry and say goodbye to the boy in the harbor.

To David's displeasure, the couple stayed in a third-rate hotel and took the first ferry the next day. Alexis wonders what happened to the young man, which David doesn't care about. After the crossing, they continue their motorboat to their property. There, Alexis is very interested in mushrooms on the way, while David, exasperated, goes to the house.

David wants to surprise Alexis with a picnic . They go out to sea in their motorboat , the rowboat with the picnic basket in tow. The ship is damaged in a bank of fog that suddenly appears , which they can no longer avoid. They reach the mainland by dinghy . You see a fire in the distance and David walks towards it. Alexis stays with the boat, she sees a figure coming towards her. She screams, David comes running and knocks the person down. It is the young man that David apologizes to. They sit down around a campfire together. The young man (whose name is not known throughout the film) helps repair the boat and they take him into the house. During the night, Alexis has a nightmare in which David kills the boy out of jealousy .

In the morning the boy surprises her with an opulent breakfast. For the first time, David is friendly towards him, tells of the rules that prevail here, which mean that the boy has to compete against him in cooking. Alexis then has to decide who is the better cook. During the day they play badminton , with the boy accidentally knocking the ball into poison ivy . After his wife scoffs, David pulls out the ball and she hoses it with a jet of water. As the three of them are lying in the sun, Alexis asks her husband to put some lotion on her back. When David doesn't come immediately, the boy puts cream on Alexis, under the suspicious gaze of David.

In the afternoon David goes to play golf and says goodbye to his wife with the words " I love you ". Alexis is bored and finds the young man sleeping in the barn. It turns out that he is some kind of poet, but he has to let other people write his thoughts down as he can hardly write. He asks Alexis to write something down for him and then sign it, as does everyone else who helped him.

They both drink a lot and are foolish. Then they go to collect mushrooms. Alexis can barely prevent the boy from eating a poisonous mushroom. She knows about mushrooms because her father taught her how to pick mushrooms. Her father had taught her to distinguish two very similar types of mushrooms: one is highly toxic, the other an aphrodisiac . Now there is a kiss between the two.

In the evening David comes home in a bad mood, he wasn't very successful in catching lobsters. David pours himself a whiskey and starts preparing the meal. After dinner, David wants to take the man back to the mainland, but they'll be back soon because the rowing boat is broken. The next morning the situation escalates. David freaks out after banter with Alexis. There are accusations, shouting, arguments, violence. David pounces on the boy, hits him, they both run out into the rain and disappear into the forest. What remains is the wife who - as it appears - is killing herself.

But here we are dealing with a murder disguised as a suicide, which turns out to be a conspiracy long planned by David and the young man with the aim of gaining the woman's inheritance. The final scene of the film confirms the suspicion that the two men have been a secret couple for a long time.
