The Portrait of Dorian Gray is a film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Oscar Wilde from 1970. It was directed by Massimo Dallamano , who was also involved in the script and relocated the story to the present of the late 1960s and 70s. The title role of Dorian Gray was played by Helmut Berger . The critics were not very impressed by the film, which premiered on April 22, 1970 in Germany (one of the producing countries).

content

Dorian Gray is a playboy who made his home on the jet set of the late 1960s. His friend Basil paints a picture of him that shows him only wearing jeans and a scarf. Art dealer Wotton is not only interested in the picture, but also in the Dorian model. He introduces him to large society; while Dorian succumbs to every temptation and pursues every impulse of will, his portrait ages instead; he himself remains young and beautiful. When Dorian realizes this, after a discussion with Basil, he realizes his fate, which keeps him trapped in the light-heartedness. Because he wants to start again, his young alter ego stabs himself . He collapses, in death he takes on the features of the old portrait alter ego and shows him again as a young, handsome man.

criticism

“The last sentence of the novel… also applies here:“ His identity with Dorian Gray could only be determined from the rings that he used to wear. ”Here are only the title (cf. the film) and certain features of the story, reminiscent of the novel. "

“Still, such a modern film version as the Italian director Massimo Dallamano (" Venus in Furs ") is now presenting, Wilde does not deserve. Dorian, portrayed by the Austrian Helmut Berger, presents himself as a depraved playboy of the jet-set era who does it with everyone, for money and for love. "

“Oscar Wilde's novel, published in 1891, is an elaborate but conventional remake that relocates the simile events to the late 1960s, but only achieves a meaningless" backdrop ". The "modernity" of the film consists mainly in its erotic scenes. "
