The castle behind the rainbow (alternative title: The castle behind the rainbow ; original title: Romanian : Tinerețe fără bătrînețe ) is a Romanian fairy tale film by Elisabeta Bostan from 1969 , based on the Romanian fairy tale classic by Petre Ispirescu youth without age and life without death ( Romanian : Tinerețe fără bătrânețe și viață fără de moarte ).

action

A farmer promises his child "the everlasting youth - youth without age and life without death" so that it will stop crying. When the son grows up, he wants to redeem it, but his father cannot give it to him. The farmer's son then goes out into the world to look for it himself. While wandering through the world, he comes across the “master of time”, who drives time with a giant wheel. He advises the farmer's son against his plan, because even if he defied all dangers, he would still have to master three tasks. He walks on and gives water to a flower asking for help and raises it up again. Thereupon she turns into a pretty girl. She thanks him and gives him a magical horn to call her with if he should be in danger, but the horn would only sound three times. She turns back into a flower and the horn sounds: he just wanted to see her again. A little later he comes across the lying prince, from whose clutches he frees the bird queen. She warns him of a wicked witch who wants to kill him, and lets him choose the most beautiful of her feathers, which he should put behind his ear, in case hope and confidence ever leave him. He throws the caged lying prince down a slope with his cage.

Finally he reaches the “castle behind the rainbow” in the realm of “youth without age and life without death” and has to cope with the notorious three tasks. The first task is to snatch the “golden ear of goodness” from the witch and bring it to the king. The witch, “ruler of the realm of drought”, offers him in return for his help to lead him to the hiding place of the coveted object. He goes to work to make her land fertile again while she tries to make his job difficult. But the witch gets tired and finally falls asleep. When he's finished, she won't wake up. Then he takes the pen and sticks it behind his ear, whereupon it turns into a flute and wakes the witch with loud play. He brings the “golden ear” that he has won to the royal palace.

The second task is to fetch the "golden apple of truth" from the depths of the earth. After searching for a while, the warrior strikes his horn to find out where the fairy is. She appears and tells him to make his way to the Kingdom of Lies because the liars hate the truth from the bottom of their hearts and therefore stole the apple thousands of years ago. She also advises him to pull the ring from the king of lies in his sleep in order to find the apple with his help. After a little romance they split up and he reaches the realm of the king of lies. In the thicket, however, the lying prince, thirsting for revenge, has observed everything. Arrived in the realm of lies, the warrior is taken prisoner; The prince accuses him of having crossed the border of the empire with fifty warriors. At night he can free himself and steals the ring from the king. However, the latter wakes up, calls for his men, and a wild chase begins. The brave warrior can escape from the castle, but is pursued by the prince with a horde of horsemen deep into the earth, where he is in dire straits. Then in dire need he finds the "golden apple" which gives him protection from liars. The king's men give up; only the lying prince is still on his heels.

Back at the castle he is allowed to enter for the first time and sees his lover there, who is the king's daughter. He accepts the third task, which entrusts him to bring back the lost golden key of the book of the "Kingdom of youth without age and life without death". Whoever brings back the key of this book may read it, remain in the kingdom, and the king's daughter would also be promised to him. So he goes to the “realm of deceptive waters”, where the key is said to be - just like the lying prince who had listened to the conversation. Once there, the two work together to get the key, which is in a high tower. But no sooner is the lying prince in possession of the key than he plunges the warrior into the interior of the tower and quickly rides back to the “castle behind the rainbow”. Meanwhile, the warrior calls on the Lord of Time to help him. The latter agrees on the condition that he answer three questions. After answering the questions, he gets the real key, hurries back to the castle, prevents the wedding of the king's daughter and the lying prince (this is passing) and marries the king's daughter himself. The hero now has everything he wanted and receives advice: "Even if it does lusted: Never drink the water of suffering and longing, you could (bitterly) regret it, because you would lose everything you fought for. " But during the festivities the warrior drinks from it, and the king's daughter does the same. Out of longing, he leaves the fairy tale realm with his wife and returns to the world of earthly people.
