action

The miracle of Bern tells a family story against the backdrop of the 1954 World Cup . It's about a father-son relationship in the Ruhr area of the German post-war period. The nine year old Matthias lives with his mother Christa and his older siblings in Essen . Since her father Richard is still a prisoner of war , Christa masters the difficult post-war years without her husband by her side. Life after the war is tough and everyone fights for themselves first. Matthias is a big football fan and raves about the German national player Helmut Rahn . For the nine-year-old, Rahn is a role model and conceited surrogate father, also because Matthias has never seen his father Richard. Matthias's greatest wish is to accompany his idol to the soccer World Cup. When his father returns home after ten years as a prisoner of war, the family's life changes suddenly. Richard Lubanski is overwhelmed with the new life in Germany and can neither cope with the independence of his wife nor with the attitudes and dreams of his children.

At the same time, the German national soccer team begins preparations for its first participation in a soccer world championship after the Second World War. For the final in Bern, father Richard surprises his son and drives him to the stadium. At the end of the second half they reach Bern. After a 0-2 deficit, it is now 2-2 in the game against the clear favorites Hungary . The ball rolls out and directly in front of Matthias's feet. He picks up the ball and throws it to his idol Helmut Rahn. Both look into each other's eyes, then the game continues. The reporter comments: “Rahn should shoot from the background. Rahn shoots… goal! Goal! Goal! Goal! ”A few minutes later, the game is over and Germany is the soccer world champion. The people at home lie in each other's arms and celebrate the victory of their team, which is seen as a new beginning after the terrible war with a lot of suffering, misery and death.

Historical background

The 1954 Soccer World Cup takes place at a time that is still heavily influenced by the aftermath of the Second World War. Hunger, suffering and misery are part of everyday life in Germany, which is still largely destroyed. In the 1950s, however, the economy slowly picked up. The boom, which soon helped West Germany in particular to become a prosperous society, is known today as the economic miracle .

The 1954 World Cup in Switzerland was the first since 1938 to be attended by a German team. Many German citizens perceived this as a sign of a return to normality after the war and the difficult post-war years. The German national team has a hard time getting into the tournament and experiences a 3-8 defeat against Hungary. After two wins against Turkey, she still reached the quarter-finals. After victories against Yugoslavia (2-0) and against Austria (6-1), she was in the World Cup final against Hungary on July 4, 1954. The decisive goal for Germany fell in the 84th minute. Six minutes later Germany was soccer world champion. Today this moment is called the miracle of Bern .
