Dasylirion gentryi is a species of the genus Dasylirion in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). An English common name is "Gentry's Sotol".
description
Dasylirion gentryi forms a short, woody trunk up to 50 cm in height. The variable, green, smooth, serrated leaves are 70 to 130 cm long and 10 to 25 mm wide. The irregularly arranged, up to 2 mm long radial spines are directed upwards.
The panicley, narrow inflorescence becomes 2 to 4 m high. The flowers are white to cream in color. The flowering period extends from March to April.
The egg-shaped to round capsule fruits contain one or rarely 2 seeds and are 10 to 12 mm long and 8 to 9 mm wide. The triangular seeds are 3.5 mm long and 2.5 mm wide.
Distribution and systematics
Dasylirion gentryi is found in Mexico in the southeast of Sonora and in the region of Chihuahua at an altitude of 1100 to 1700 m. It grows on stony slopes and in open woodland, associated with Yucca declinata and various agave species.
It was first described in 1998 by David John Bogler .
Dasylirion gentryi is a member of the Dasylirion section . The glossy, variable leaves are typical. The large, pink fruits are characteristic. It is similar to Dasylirion durangense and Dasylirion wheeleri , members of the Glaucophyllum section , but there are clear differences in the flower structure. Dasylirion gentryi is little known and rare in culture.
