Dasylirion simplex is a species of the genus Dasylirion in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). The specific epithet simplex means 'simple'. An English common name is "Mexican Sotol".

description

Dasylirion simplex grows stemless and forms groups with narrow rosettes. The variable, green, smooth, serrated leaves are 50 to 120 cm long and 6 to 12 mm wide. The tips are fibrous in the juvenile stage.

The panicley, narrow inflorescence becomes 1 to 2 m high. The flowers are white to cream in color. The flowering period extends from July to August.

The egg-shaped capsule fruits contain one or two seeds and are 6 to 8 mm long and 6 to 12 mm wide. The triangular seeds are 3.5 mm long and 2.5 mm wide.

Dasylirion simplex can withstand short periods of frost down to minus 8 ° C.

Distribution and systematics

Dasylirion simplex occurs in Mexico in the state of Durango at 1800–2100 m altitude and is rare. It grows in a gritty, calcareous substrate, associated with Yucca decipiens , Nolina durangensis and various Opuntia species.

It was first described in 1911 by William Trelease .

Dasylirion simplex is a member of the Dasylirion section . It forms clumps with small rosettes and smooth, toothed leaves. The fibrous end tips are typical in the juvenile stage. It is closely related to Dasylirion durangense , a member of the Glaucophyllum section , but there are clear differences in the leaf structure (waxy).

Dasylirion simplex is rarely found in culture.
