David B. Haight (1979)

David Bruce Haight (born September 2, 1906 in Oakley , Idaho ; † July 31, 2004 ) was an Apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles from 1976 until his death .

Life

Haight grew up as the son of Hector C. and Clara Tuttle Haight along with several siblings in Oakley, Idaho. The Mormon pioneer Horton D. Haight was his grandfather. When he was nine years old, his father died. Haight attended Oakley High School and Albion State Normal School in Idaho. Haight studied at Utah State University at Logan from 1925 to 1928 . Haight was now active in retail . Starting at the Keith O'Brien department store in Salt Lake City, his further career took him to various states , most recently to Palo Alto , California , where he was manager of 25 department stores in Montgomery Ward . In 1943 he was drafted into the US Navy . After the end of the Second World War he worked again for Montgomery Ward. This time in Chicago , Illinois , where he was the manager responsible for 165 stores. In 1949 he returned to Palo Alto and started his own retail business. As a successful businessman, he was eventually elected mayor of the city and held this office from 1959 to 1963. When David O. McKay , 9th President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, appointed him mission president for the Mormon Mission in Scotland, Haight stepped down as mayor. He returned to the United States three and a half years later and served in the administration of Brigham Young University. Another three years later, in April 1970, he was called to serve as Assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles . He held that office until January 1976 when he was called by Spencer W. Kimball , 12th President of the Church, to be an Apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Haight succeeded the late Apostle Hugh B. Brown .

Haight had been married since 1930. The marriage resulted in three children, two sons and a daughter. In August 1998 he received an honorary doctorate from Brigham Young University .
