David B. Brooks (born August 11, 1961 in Toronto , Ontario ) is an American journalist . Above all, he has appeared as a conservative political commentator and business journalist .

Life

Brooks grew up in New York City before studying at the University of Chicago . In 1983 he graduated there with a Bachelor of Arts in history .

In 1984 Brooks began his journalistic career with the Washington Times , before joining the Wall Street Journal two years later as a foreign correspondent, reporting from Brussels on Europe , Russia , South Africa and the Middle East . When the Weekly Standard was launched in September 1995, he was one of the paper's first journalists as Senior Editor .

In the years that followed, Brooks made a name for himself as a conservative critic and commentator. He took a stand on political issues, but also on economic issues and issues of modern culture. In addition to his work as a writing journalist, he appeared on television programs. Among other things, he is a long-time commentator in the weekly Shields & Brooks section of PBS Newshour .

In 2000 he published with Bobos in Paradise an analysis of the American upper class at the turn of the millennium and thus coined the term Bobo . He also appeared as a commentator on Newsweek and the Atlantic Monthly . Since 2003 he has been a regular Op-Ed for the New York Times . In 2010 Brooks was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
