David H. Krantz (born December 30, 1938 in Buffalo , New York ) is an American mathematician and psychologist .

Life

Krantz first studied mathematics at Yale University . He left the university in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts degree summa cum laude . He then studied mathematical psychology at the University of Pennsylvania . His Ph.D. - He finished his studies in 1964 with his dissertation entitled The scaling of small and large color differences .

After graduating, Krantz moved to the University of Michigan . Initially assistant professor of psychology, he rose to associate professor in 1968 , before being appointed full professor in 1971. In 1980 he went to the privately owned Bell Laboratories . In 1985 he returned to academia when he accepted a professorship at Columbia University . There he was head of the statistics department between 1990 and 1992. In the following years he was particularly involved in The Earth Institute , which was created in 1995, and was founding director of the Center for the Decision Sciences and the Center for Research on Environmental Decisions at the university.

Krantz worked in various scientific fields, with a focus on measurement theory , color perception and the application of mathematical and statistical methods in everyday life. In particular, in collaboration with Duncan Luce , Patrick Suppes and Amos Tversky , he developed the fundamentals of measurement theory. With Luce he developed a concept for mathematical modeling within the framework of decision theory : the so-called Luce-Krantz models offer an approach in which context effects are also incorporated into the modeling as situation knowledge.
