David Macdonald (biologist)

David Whyte Macdonald , CBE , FRGS , FRSE , FRSB , (born September 30, 1951 in Oxford ) is a British biologist , conservationist and non-fiction author .

Life

Macdonald is the son of William Alexander Fraser and Williamina Stirrat Macdonald, née Whyte. His father was a doctor. From 1975 to 2015 he was married to Jennifer Mary Wells. From this marriage there were two daughters and one son.

Macdonald studied at St. Lawrence College in Ramsgate and at Wadham College of Oxford University , where he the 1972 Bachelor of Arts with honors earned. From 1976 to 1979 he was a junior researcher at Balliol College, University of Oxford. In 1977 he received his doctorate in philosophy (DPhil.) There . From 1979 to 1984 he was a research fellow at the Ernest Cook Trust . From 1984 to 1987 he was a research fellow at Nuffield College . Since 1986 he has been Senior Scientist for Wildlife and Conservation at Lady Margaret Hall , Oxford. In the same year he founded the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCru) in the Zoological Faculty of the University of Oxford, the first research unit for nature conservation at a European university. From 1997 to 2003 he was visiting professor at Cornell University . Since 2004 he has been visiting professor of wildlife and nature conservation at Imperial College London .

From 2002 to 2005 he was a member of the Pesticide Advisory Committee in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs . From 2003 to 2005 he was a member of the committee for environmental issues. In 2002 he became a consultant on the Research Advisory Board for Biodiversity . From 2003 to 2004 he was a member and in 2004 he was chairman of the Darwin Advisory Committee . In 2000 he was an advisor to the Burns Inquiry on dog hunting . From 2000 to 2005 he was a representative of the independent hunting authority. From 2002 to 2011 he was a biodiversity advisor at the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. In 1985 he was a founding member and until 2005 chairman of the IUCN / Species Survival Commission Canid Specialist Group. He has been a member of WWF UK since 2008 .

In addition to numerous non-fiction books, he has authored three dozen television documentaries, including The Night of the Fox , which won the BAFTA Award for Best Documentary Film in 1976, The Curious Cat , Meercats United (awarded at the Wildscreen Festival 1988) and the seven-part series The Velvet Claw all broadcast on the BBC's programming. He is also the author of numerous articles in specialist journals, including New Scientist , Nature and the Journal of the Zoological Society of London .

honors and awards

In 2005 Macdonald won the Dawkins Prize for Conservation and Animal Welfare. In 2006 he received the C. Hart Merriam Award from the American Society of Mammalogists for achievements in mammal research and in 2007 the Medal from the Mammal Society of Great Britain . In 1978 he became a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS), in 1990 a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB) and a Fellow of the Institute of Biology (FIBiol) and in March 2008 he was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) elected. In 2004 he received an honorary doctorate (DSc Oxon) from the University of Oxford.

At Queen Elizabeth II's Birthday Honors in 2010, he was named Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE).
