David Bernard Montgomery, 2nd Viscount Montgomery of Alamein CMG , CBE (* August 18, 1928 - January 8, 2020 ) was a British politician , formerly the Conservative Party , businessman and is committed to good relations with South America . He was the son of the famous field marshal of the Second World War , Bernard Montgomery .

Life

Montgomery attended Winchester College and graduated with an engineering degree from Trinity College, Cambridge .

He entered business life , worked for Yardley of London (director 1963–1974) and various other companies, developing close ties with Latin America . He was patron ( saint ) and Chairman ( Chairman ) of various Anglo-Hispanic organizations, including the Anglo-Argentine Society (1976-1987), Canning House and the Hispanic and Luso Brazilian Council . The Company Canning House Montgomery was 1978-1980 Chairman ( Chair ) and 1987-1994 President.

From 1974 to 1978 he was Councilor of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea . He was President of the British Industrial Exhibition in 1974 (Sao Paulo), 1977 (Caracas) and 1978 (Mexico). From 1980 to 1982 he was Chairman of the Brazilian Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain, and since 1983 he has been Vice-President . From 1982 to 1999 he was President of the Restaurateurs Association of Great Britain and from 1985 to 2003 of the Center for International Briefing, Farnham Castle . From 1994 to 2006 Montgomery was President of the Anglo-Belgian Society and from 2001 to 2006 of the Cambridge University Engineers Association .

Occasionally he lectured at D-Day Tours hosted by the US National War Museum . He was a consultant ( Consultant ) of the Du Maurier Productions .

From 1991 to 2002 he was chairman of the Baring Puma Fund . From 1974 to 1994 he was a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Vision Interamericana . From 1974 to 2000 he was Managing Director of Terimar Services Ltd . He was 1974-1978 Chancellor ( Chancellor ) of the RBC & K From 1980 to 1982 he was in Antofagasta (Chile) and Bolivia Railway Co. From 1992 to 1994 he was chairman of the European Atlantic Group , where he was from 1994 to 1997 president.

From 1977 to 1993 he was the Non-Executive Director of Korn / Ferry International and from 1980 to 1987 of Northern Engineering Industries . From 1980 to 1994 Montgomery was patron of the D-Day and Normandy Fellowship , from 1984 to 2002 with the Eighth Army Veterans Association from 1990 to 1999 with the Restaurateurs Association of GB , where he was president from 1982 to 1990, and Redgrave Theater Farnham from 1978 to 1990.

Membership in the House of Lords

When his father died in 1976, Montgomery inherited the title of Viscount Montgomery of Alamein and the then associated seat in the House of Lords . He gave his inaugural address on December 1, 1976. As topics of political interest, he named consumer affairs on the House of Lords website. He named the states of Latin America as states of interest .

Originally he was a conservative in the upper house. He lost his seat under the House of Lords Act 1999 . He returned as a crossbencher through the by-election that followed the death of Cherry Drummond, 16th Baroness Strange in 2005 . He took the oath on June 28, 2005.

From 2007 to 2012 he was Chairman of the House of Lords London Group .

On July 23, 2015, Montgomery voluntarily retired and left the House of Lords under the rules of the House of Lords Reform Act 2014.

International career

From 1987 to 1999 and again since 2008 he was a member of the Executive Committee of the IPU British Group . From 1992 to 1999 he was a delegate to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe .

Honors

He became Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1975 and Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 2000. He has also received awards from Germany , Belgium , Spain , Chile , Argentina , Brazil , Mexico , Venezuela and Colombia .

Montgomery was a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Mercers . In 1989 he became the bearer of the Grand Officer of the Order Bernardo O'Higgins in Chile . In 1992 he was awarded the Grand Officer of the Order of the Liberator of San Martin in Argentina . The following year he was awarded the Grand Officer of the Order of the Southern Cross in Brazil and the Orden de Isabel la Católica in Spain, as well as the Federal Cross of Merit (July 22, 1993). In 1994 he was honored with the Encomienda Orden del Aguila Azteca in Mexico . Montgomery became Commander of the Order of Leopold II in Belgium in 1997 . In Colombia he received the Grand Cross of the Orden de San Carlos in 1998 and in 1999 the Grand Officer of the Orden del Libertador in Venezuela.

Montgomery and Alistair Horne wrote The Lonely Leader: Monty 1944-45, a book about his father in 1994 , which documents both his previous life and that of his father.

family

Montgomery married Mary Connell on February 27, 1953. They divorced in 1967 and had a son and a daughter. He then married Tessa Browning, daughter of Daphne du Maurier and Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Browning , a close colleague of his father.

With his death, the title fell to his son Henry David Montgomery as 3rd Viscount.
