David Steel Stewart (born March 11, 1947 in Glasgow - † November 13, 2018 ) was a Scottish football goalkeeper . As a substitute goalkeeper for Leeds United in the mid-1970s, he was mostly overshadowed by David Harvey , but then played on his behalf in the 1975 final of the European Cup , which was lost 2-0 to FC Bayern Munich in Paris.

Athletic career

At a young age, Stewart played for various small clubs in his native Glasgow. These included Wellshot , Shettleston Violet and the Kilsyth Rangers - with the latter team he even won the Scottish Junior Cup in 1967 . He worked as an upholsterer and carpet fitter and in the year of the cup victory he moved around 60 kilometers to the southwest to the second division Ayr United . He immediately became a regular player as a part-time goalkeeper in the coastal city and in his first two seasons, which led to promotion to the highest Scottish league in 1969, he missed only one of 72 league encounters. In the next four years in the First Division he established himself as one of the best Scottish goalkeepers and during his time in Ayr he made seven caps for the U-23 selection. His strengths, which were mainly expressed in good reflexes, got around beyond the Scottish border and so in October 1973 the English top club Leeds United had the transfer fee of 30,000 pounds for a transfer. He should primarily replace Gary Sprake, who had migrated to Birmingham City . In Ayr he had played 193 league games; 35 years later, he was nominated for the club's "Hall of Fame".

In the five years or so until November 1978, Stewart mostly acted as a replacement behind regular goalkeeper David Harvey; he mostly played games in the reserve team. During the championship season 1973/74 he was only represented in three consecutive league games from the end of February 1974 against Leicester City , Newcastle United and Manchester City , remained there without defeat, but did not qualify for the official receipt of a medal. To a longer phase than "number 1" he came in the second half of the 1974/75 season after Harvey was injured in a car accident. Stewart was in the decisive phase on the way to the final of the European Champions Cup between the posts and after appearances against RSC Anderlecht (3: 0, 1: 0) and FC Barcelona (2: 1, 1: 1) he played there on May 28, 1975 against FC Bayern Munich the most important game of his career. The game in the Prinzenparkstadion in Paris ended with an unfortunate 2-0 defeat and thus Stewart missed another possible medal. After Harvey's return, Stewart did not come back regularly until March 1977 and he played 27 league games across seasons. His only international match for the Scottish national team fell into this phase and in the 1-0 defeat against the GDR he saved a penalty on September 7, 1977 in Berlin. When finally Ron Atkinson submitted a transfer offer from league rivals West Bromwich Albion in November 1978, Stewart moved to "WBA" for 70,000 pounds.

The 15 months for West Bromwich were sobering, because Stewart did not play a single competitive game as a substitute behind the "permanently present" Tony Goddon . So he moved in February 1980 to Swansea City , Wales , which played in the English second division. In the team of coach John Toshack , which was reinforced with some former Liverpool teammates, in 1981 succeeded in addition to the victory in the Welsh Cup, promotion to the top division before Stewart lost his regular place to the newly committed Dai Davies . His loss of a regular place gave him a particularly bitter note because on the first day of the 1981/82 season he was only allowed to passively watch the 5-1 win against the ex-club from Leeds. Stewart moved to Hong Kong in July 1982 and stayed with Ryoden FC for two years before retiring from playing.

Stewart decided to continue living in the Swansea area in South Wales and after running his own carpet shop he worked for many years as a goldsmith in the jewelry industry.
