occupation

De caravana ( . Span , roughly translated: On Party Tour , international title: clubbing ) is an Argentine gangster - and romance - comedy from 2010 and the feature film directorial debut of Rosendo Ruiz . The feature film tells the love story of a young man from the upper class and a young woman from a slum with contacts to the criminal milieu.

action

The 28-year-old Sara , who comes from a slum in Córdoba , has separated from her long-time friend, the petty criminal “Laucha” , and wants to set up a beauty salon with her new roommate, the transvestite Penélope , and thus start a “normal” life. At a concert by Cuarteto singer Carlos “La Mona” Jiménez , who is very popular in the lower class , she meets the wealthy advertising photographer Juan , who takes photos of the singer's appearance for a CD cover for his agency. Juan invites Sara to his home that night and takes photos of her. After Juan's phone conversation, during which he expresses himself contemptuously about the concert-goers, the offended Sara disappears with his camera. Instead of calling the police, he decides to get the camera back himself and meets Penélope in her apartment, with whom he had already spoken at the concert. He succeeds in taking advantage of Penélope's good-naturedness and stealing the camera.

Shortly afterwards, Sara and Penélope stand in front of Juan's door with the musician and dealer “Maxtor” and threaten him with a knife. They force him to hand over the camera and a laptop: Not only were photos of the concert stored there, but also some snapshots of a drug deal compromising Maxtor. They also steal some framed photos with which Juan wants to take part in a photo competition and is preparing an exhibition in a museum. Maxtor uses it to blackmail Juan to do jobs for him.

During the series of jobs, Sara and Juan get closer again. Laucha , who is still attached to Sara and dreams of kidnapping the popular singer Jiménez for a large ransom, learns of the liaison and follows the couple, which leads to a first clash at a concert by Maxtor's band. After a disco evening in which Juan performed an assignment for Maxtor, Sara and Juan ended up at a Jiménez concert again. There she recognizes Laucha, who is also present, and beats up Juan, but quickly lets go of him and drives him to his apartment. His plan: He wants to use the fact that Juan lives in the same (upper class) district as Carlos Jiménez and is involved in his promotion campaign for his kidnapping plans.

Sara meets Juan again at a birthday party in a country club . A dispute ensues: she feels discriminated against by his wealthy friends, Juan accuses her of her relationship with Laucha, which he had previously kept secret. They part ways for the time being.

The situation comes to a head when Laucha tries to implement his kidnapping plan on the day of Juan's photo exhibition and breaks into Juan's apartment. His plans are thwarted by Maxtor and Penélope with the help of a policeman friend. The film takes another turn when Juan shows secretly taken photos with Maxtor, Sara and Penélope at the exhibition. In the end, Sara and Juan are on the verge of reconciliation .

production

Most of the film was shot on location in Cordoba . Production wise striking are the atypically long for comedies settings with which Ruiz intended to give the film more realistic. The scenes with Carlos Jiménez were created at real live concerts by the singer, where the lighting was adapted to the requirements of the film.

reception

The film was initially presented at the 2010 Mar del Plata Film Festival . It was released in Argentine cinemas in 2011 and stayed on the schedule for eight weeks. In 2011 De Caravana was shown at the Hamburg Film Festival .

criticism

De Caravana was received positively by the Argentine criticism. Diego Batlle ( La Nación ) gave the comedy a very good grade and praised the many ideas, the wit, the talent and the great moments of the film; however, there are imbalances in the acting performances and some unnatural scenes. Miguel Frías ( Clarín ) described the film as a "great cocktail of entertainment and anthropology". In De Caravana , snobs and antiheroes crossed with the lower class characters of Adrián Caetano ( pizza, birra, faso ).

Horacio Bernades ( Página / 12 ) also rated the film positively. It is a comedy à la Tarantino and a testimony to urban anthropology; he demonstrates the division of the social classes in Argentina. The film poses problems for viewers from the middle and upper classes because it shows the subtle discrimination against the lower class by this population group; In the final scene, the poor criminal Laucha appears morally more convincing than the rich photographer Juan. Roger Koza ( La Voz del Interior ) particularly praised the acting performances of Gustavo Almada ( Laucha ) and Rodrigo Savina ( Maxtor ), who symbolically filled the film. While Laucha embodies the anger of the oppressed, Maxtor succumbs to the utopia of a rebellion against social norms that go beyond his class.
