Deadly Premonition (German: Tödliche Vorahung ) is a video game from the Japanese development studio Access Games. It was first released in the US on February 17, 2010; the European release took place through Rising Star Games on October 29, 2010. The creative mind behind the design decisions was Hidetaka "Swery 65" Suehiro. In Europe and North America only a version for the Xbox 360 appeared , while in Japan a PlayStation 3 version with the name Red Seeds Profile is available. The Director's Cut for the western market followed in 2013 . Deadly Premonition is one of the first survival horror games with an open game world . Despite its qualitative inadequacies, it enjoys cult status .

action

The player plays FBI agent Francis York Morgan, who is investigating the murder of a young woman, Anna Graham, in the city of Greenvale. In town he is received by Police Chief George Woodman and his colleague Emily Wyatt. They explain to him the background to the murder, which has been found out up to that point. In the course of the story the player gets to know more and more of the city and the people. The player also met Zach, York's second personality. Often it is not certain whether York is addressing Zach with his personality or the player himself. More and more secrets are thrown up in the game and finally solved. Towards the end you learn more and more details about York's life and fate.

main characters

Francis "York" Morgan
York is the main character in the whole story. He is an FBI agent who at first seems unsympathetic and is supposed to find the connection between various murders and a certain case in the small town of Greenvale. York prefers to work alone, is a chain smoker and talks to his second self "Zach". This seems to be his best friend who helped him out of a traumatizing childhood experience. It should also be noted that York has a noticeable scar on its face that catches the eye of many Greenvale residents. York generally seems to be a very withdrawn person who doesn't talk about private matters.
Emily Wyatt
Emily is Greenvale's deputy. She has light blonde hair, light skin and is of a rather delicate stature. Her character could be described as caring, loving and helpful. Between her and FBI agent York a special tension builds up from the start.
George Woodman
George is the sheriff of Greenvale. He wears a cowboy hat, has a well-trimmed so-called Wallros Schnauzer and is quite tall. He immediately declines York's help, saying that York is not needed to solve the murder of Anna Graham.
The raincoat killer
The Raincoatkiller is a local legend according to which a man in a long red raincoat, armed with an ax, kills young women when it rains.
Anna Graham
Anna is found dead and covered in blood tied to a tree in the opening sequence of Deadly Premonition. Her murder is why FBI Agent York is coming to Greenvale.
Isaach and Isaiah Ingram
Isaach and Isaiah Ingram are the two children who find Anna's body in the opening sequence while they are walking through the woods with Jim Green. You are fascinated by the beauty of Anna. They are twins.
Jim Green
He is the forester of Greenvale and finds Anna Graham's body with Isaach and Isaiah Ingram.

criticism

Despite poor graphics and a "control that always brings you to despair", Carsten Görig for Spiegel Online comes to the assessment that it is a "terrific" game. The game is a "mixture of Japanese horror films, David Lynch's Twin Peaks and a good portion of psychedelic dreams" that "captivates from the first minute".

IGN believes Deadly Premonition has the worst graphics you can get on an Xbox, giving it 2 out of 10.

GameSpot rated it 7 out of 10.

4Players gave the game a “satisfactory” grade and a score of 65%.

The GamePro awarded 76 percent.

Metacritic calculates average scores of 68% (Xbox 360), 70% (PlayStation 3), 59% (Windows) and 70% (Nintendo Switch) for Deadly Premonition .

In Germany, the game rose in popularity by leaps and bounds when it was presented in 2011 by the Game One editors Wolf Speer and Christian Gürnth on the Game One website in the Knallhart category . The two played Deadly Premonition completely and publish the videos on the website. The editors criticized the imprecise controls and the outdated graphics, but praised the game as an unusual insider tip.

Deadly Premonition was entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the “most critically polarizing survival horror game” .

Development history

Emergence

The development of Deadly Premonition began in 2004 under the title Rainy Woods . It was first presented to the public in 2007 at the Tokyo Game Show. Rainy Woods was originally scheduled to hit the market in 2008, but much of the project has been abandoned. After realigning the development, the game was released in 2010 as Deadly Premonition .

Director's Cut

On April 26, 2013, a Director's Cut was released for the PlayStation 3 . The new edition includes improved graphics and controls.

In July 2013, developer Rising Star started a Greenlight campaign on Steam for the release of a Windows version of Deadly Premonition , which was successfully completed. The Windows version of the game also appears as a Directors Cut, but has other extras, such as: B. improved textures. The release was announced for October 31, 2013. The official release was on October 29, 2013. The PC release was criticized for having a fixed, non-configurable and low screen resolution , an issue that was resolved by an unofficial fan patch .

successor

In September 2019, publisher Rising Star Games and developer studio Toybox announced the sequel Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise via Nintendo Direct . The sequel is set in contemporary Boston and plays from the point of view of FBI agent Aaliyah Davis, while Francis York Morgan returns as a playable character in a flashback that tells the story of Deadly Premonition in the New Orleans- based city of Le Carré. Hidetaka Suehiro is once again the lead developer and writer of the plot. Unlike its predecessor, the game uses graphics in the cel-shading style. Deadly Premonition 2 was released exclusively for Nintendo Switch on July 10, 2020 and once again polarized the trade press. The weak technology met with harsh criticism and the story was praised.
