Deborah Norton

Deborah Norton (born January 29, 1944 in Croydon , Surrey ) is a British actress .

Life

Norton was born in what would later become the London borough of Croydon. She attended a boarding school run by Quakers . She completed her acting training at the Drama Center London . Norton has worked as a stage actress in numerous British theaters. She has performed at the Royal Court Theater (1978 in Inadmissible Evidence by Nicol Williamson , directed by John Osborne , 1979 in The London Cuckolds by Edward Ravenscroft , with Michael Elphick , Stephanie Beacham as partners), at the Old Vic Theater in Bristol , at Nottingham Playhouse and at the Royal National Theater (1984/1985 as Madame Pinglet in A Little Hotel On The Side , original title L'Hôtel du libre échange , by Georges Feydeau ).

In 1979 she appeared at the Lyric Theater in Hammersmith in the play Waiting for the Parade by John Murrell . In 1981 she played at the Lyttleton Theater in London in the comedy On the Razzle by Tom Stoppard based on motifs by Johann Nestroy . At the Shaftesbury Theater in London, she starred in the 1986 comedy An Italian Straw Hat (Original title: Un Chapeau de Paille d'Italie ) by Eugène Labiche . In 1989 she played at the Nuffield Theater in Southampton in the play Barnaby and the Old Boys by Keith Baxter ; in the same year she was also seen at the Aldwych Theater in London in the play Black Prince by Iris Murdoch . In 1992 she appeared at the Comedy Theater in London in the play Six Degrees of Separation by John Guare .

With the role of Polly Peachum in The Beggar's Opera , she also toured internationally, including in the United States . Norton lived in Greenwich Village for some time after completing the Beggar's Opera tour , but later returned to the UK. She also played theater in the United States. In 1989 she took on the role of Hester Salomon in the play Equus by Peter Shaffer at the Douglas Morrisson Theater in Hayward .

Norton is now also working as a theater director in the UK . In 2001 she directed the Farce Horse and Carriage by Georges Feydeau at The West Yorkshire Playhouse . Norton also worked as a literary critic and wrote book reviews for the Sunday Times ; she also presented the Arena Arts Program with Kenneth Tynan .

In 1978 Norton played in the miniseries Holocaust - The History of the Weiss Family the role of Marta Dorf , a patient of the Jewish doctor Dr. Weiss , whom Weiss and her husband Erik , an unemployed lawyer , visit because of a heart condition . She drives her husband, who later becomes Reinhard Heydrich's adjutant , into the arms of the National Socialists .

On British television , Norton was best known for her participation in the television series Yes Minister and A Bit of Fry & Laurie . She played the role of Dorothy Wainwright in the satirical British cult series Yes, Minister in the 1980s . Norton embodied the highly qualified and experienced political advisor to the Prime Minister; her character was partly understood as a satirical allusion to Margaret Thatcher .
