from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Den Danske Ordbog (also DDO ; Danish = The Danish Dictionary ; say something like: [Danish 'dänsge' orbo]; from Danish den = der, the - certain article of the utrum nominative singular before adjectives -, danske = Danish , ord = Wort und bog = book) is a six-volume work that was first published in Denmark from 2003 to 2005 and has been freely accessible on the web since 2009. It is the largest modern Danish dictionary.

Overview

Den Danske Ordbog is an independent successor to Ordbog over det danske Sprog (dictionary of the Danish language), which appeared in 28 volumes from 1918 to 1956 and 5 additional volumes from 1992 to 2005 and covers the Danish language between 1700 and 1955. Den Danske Ordbog comprises 100,000 key words in the modern Danish language since 1950 and is thus placed alongside the classics. It deals with current usage in the written and spoken word.

The Danske Ordbog provides information on spelling , inflection , language use and language development , synonyms , meaning-related words and antonyms , word formations , etymology , linguistic style , quotations , word meaning and pronunciation of Danish words.

Emergence

The Danske Ordbog is based on a corpus of around forty thousand texts from newspapers , books , magazines , radio and television programs , brochures , advertising , comics , letters , schoolwork and many other sources that appeared between 1983 and 1992 . The text corpus has a volume of around 40 million text words ( tokens ). The development of the dictionary was financed by the Carlsberg Foundation and the Danish Ministry of Culture .

Publishing and distribution

The Danske Ordbog was published by the renowned Copenhagen publisher Gyldendal . The main editors were Ebba Hjorth and Kjeld Kristensen from Det Danske Sprog- og Litteraturselskab (Society for Danish Language and Literature , DSL) . The publisher is DSL .

Since 2009, as part of the DSL project ordnet.dk, a continuously updated version of the dictionary has been freely available to everyone on the web.

Addressees

The work is aimed at pupils , students , teachers , researchers , journalists , secretaries , translators , librarians , writers and many others. In terms of demands, it is on par with the Great Dictionary of the German Language by Duden , which provides information on social and cultural changes using the language.

It is not only interesting for Danish native speakers , but also internationally for those interested in this Scandinavian language, especially Scandinavians and foreigners who are confronted with the language and want to perfect themselves in language acquisition, or have to for professional reasons. It is a supplement to the Danish-foreign language dictionaries and fully opens up the modern Danish language.
