Den Saakaldte is a black metal band founded in 2006 by Michael “Sykelig” Siouzios . The group, which was originally initiated as a solo project, is considered to be a supergroup of Black Metal due to the large number of musicians involved . Among others, members of Mayhem , Shining , Gorgoroth , 1349 and In the Woods… participated in Den Saakaldte.

history

Mikael "Sykelig" Siouzios founded the band in 2006 and soon formed a group with musicians from different Norwegian extremes - and black metal bands. Siouzios named the group after a song from Ved Buen's end . In the first line-up, Siouzios took over the vocals and guitar, Yusaf “Vicotnik” Parvez from Dødheimsgard and Ved Buens Ende took over the bass, Ole “Jormundgand” Teigen, who also played for Dødheimsgard, took over the keyboards and Jan Axel “Hellhammer” Blomberg from Mayhem the drums. Parvez left the band while the debut EP was being recorded and was replaced by Tor Risdal "Seidemann" Stavenes from 1349. After Blomberg broke his arm during a tour with Dimmu Borgir and he was unable to get involved in the recordings of the debut due to the break and scheduling difficulties due to his various band participations, he was replaced by Jarle "Uruz" Byberg from Shining and Urgehal . Towards the end of the recording, Siouzios decided against singing the songs himself and invited Niklas Kvarforth from Shining and Skitliv to sing. In April 2008 the EP Øl, Mørke Og Depresjon was released via Eerie Art Records , Aesthetic Death Records and Bylec-Tum Productions . The reviews of the EP were mediocre to positive. According to metal1, the music “unfortunately falls far short of what one had expected from these musicians.” Metal-District countered that the project would correspond to the cast. The line-up is titled as a "selected selection" and "that the gentlemen know what they are doing you can listen to the music at every second."

This was followed by the first live appearance at the Inferno Metal Festival Norway , for which Stian Winter from Gehenna and Aeternus took over the drums. Part of the presentation was the same year on the Split - EP Shining / Den Saakaldte about Temple of Darkness Records published. The studio album All Hail Pessimism on Avantgarde Music followed in January 2009 . The album was mostly discussed more positively than the debut EP. In the evaluation it was rated as a good release, which does not add anything new to the genre, but corresponds to the high quality of the musicians involved.

Following the release, the band performed again at the Inferno Metal Festival Norway, as well as for the first time at Party.San and made their first European tour. Anders Kobro from Carpathian Forest took on the role of drummer for the tour . Further line-up changes followed, including Kvarforth's departure from Den Saakaldte in March 2011 to focus on his main project Shining. In his place, Øyvind “Maztema” Hægeland from Spiral Architect took over the vocals. Jørn Folkedal von Koldbrann , however, temporarily contributed as the new drummer. In 2012 Daniel "Tybalt" Theobald took over this position from Ethereal Forest and Fortíð . Einar Thorberg “Eldur” Guðmundsson from Curse and Fortíð as singer and André “Tjalve” Kvebek from Pantheon I as second guitarist joined the recordings of the second studio album . The album Kapittel II: Faen I Helvete was released in May 2014 via Agonia Records and received divided criticism. While on Metal1 Chapter II: Faen I Helvete is rated below average and "few ideas" as well as "little of our own that makes the material of the Norwegians look distinctive" is criticized, on metal.de it is referred to as "traditional Norwegian Black Metal", which "[n] almost in perfection [...] is combined with sharp, nasty, heavy riffs from other subgenres". In Amboss Mag, the assessment was confirmed and supplemented by the assessment that the group has "mainly" taken several steps forward by changing the stylistic direction through the change of singers. On the split EPs Old Demons Rise and Diabolicum Est that followed Chapter II: Faen I Helvet and were released via Floga Records , the line-up of the group remained constant. However, Marius "Storm" Trælstad from Aeon Throne appeared as the singer for appearances in 2015 . Since 2018 Jan Fredrik "Xarim" Solheim is the new singer of the group and the previous bassist Vidar takes over the position of the second guitarist.

style

Den Saakaldte's first releases were retrospectively rated as “SHINING for the poor who happened to have picked up the original singer” and accordingly referred to as “average Depressive Black Metal ”. The album Kapittel II: Faen i Helvete , on the other hand, is compared with 1349 and Gorgoroth and discussed as typical Norwegian Black Metal.

The closeness of the first releases to Shining is tied in particular to Kvarforth's vocals and the “prevailing mood in the quieter parts”. Kvarforth's singing is "difficult to get used to [...], heavily jazzy and just sick." Thorberg's singing, on the other hand, presents "from harsh nagging to throaty clear singing [...] the entire range of black singing art." In particular, the change in guitar playing, which is now called "Bitter [...] riffs that oscillate between Thrash and Death Metal " characterize the further development of the group on Chapter II: Faen i Helvete . Here, "clinking were tremolo riffs to open HELLHAMMER / CELTIC FROST worship" in the guitar play is recognized. The previous albums are more characterized by melodic guitar arrangements and synthetic orchestrations, among other things polyphonic guitar melodies are a feature of the album All Hail Pessimism . The rhythm is usually described as dynamic.
