Dennis Stock (born July 24, 1928 in New York City , New York , † January 11, 2010 in Sarasota , Florida ) was an American photojournalist and a member of the Magnum Photos photo agency .

Life

Dennis Stock initially served in the United States Army and from 1947 to 1951 did an apprenticeship as a photographer with the photographer Gjon Mili . In 1951 he won first prize from Life magazine in a competition for young photographers. In the same year, Stock became an “extraordinary member” of the Magnum agency. In 1954 he became a full member of the agency.

In 1955, Stock met the actor James Dean and realized a photo series with the rising young star in Hollywood , in Dean's native Indiana and in New York. His photograph James Dean haunted Times Square , New York City, 1955 , became world-famous and found its way into countless poster galleries and postcards, and is one of the most widely reproduced photographs of the post-war period. The black and white photograph shows the actor with his coat pulled up and a casual cigarette in the corner of his mouth on a wet day. With this motif, Dennis Stock created an icon that multiplied the cult around the actor who died early. The story of these photos serves as the basis for the film Life , released in 2015 . Robert Pattinson can be seen in the role of Stock .

From 1957 to the early 1960s, Stock focused his lens primarily on jazz musicians . In 1962 he received the first prize at the international photo competition in Poland. In 1968, Dennis Stock was exempt from Magnum to his own film company that Visual Objectives Inc. to build.

From 1969 he was again Vice President for New Media and Film at Magnum. In the mid-1970s he toured Japan and the Far East , and numerous photo reports such as B. over regions such as Hawaii or Alaska .

Dennis Stock lived in Provence , France until his death .
