The Libertador General San Martín Department is located in the heart of the Misiones Province in Argentina and borders the San Ignacio , Montecarlo , Cainguás and the Republic of Paraguay . It is one of 17 administrative units in the province.
It has an area of 1,451 km² which corresponds to 4.88% of the total area of the province of Misiones. In the 2001 census, 42,440 inhabitants were counted, then 46,561 inhabitants in 2010.
The department includes the municipalities of Capioví , El Alcázar , Garuhapé , Puerto Leoni , Puerto Rico and Ruiz de Montoya .
