The feature film Thursday (original title: Il giovedì ) by Dino Risi is a Commedia all'italiana from 1964. Risi shows how the demands in consumer society and female employment call traditional masculinity into question.

action

Dino is unsuccessful at work and also as a representative for encyclopedias and lives at the expense of his partner Elsa. He has an eight-year-old son whom his separated mother has not allowed him to see for five years. Now he can spend a whole Thursday with him.

In order to make the best possible impression on little Robertino, he rents an imposing road cruiser with money borrowed from Elsa. They take them to different places in Rome. Dino tells the boy adventurous stories about his alleged imprisonment of war and also gives many other things that the clever boy soon sees through. On the beach they meet Elsa, who was able to find permanent employment for Dino. But Dino refuses because he still has the dream of making a lot of money with a big business instead of doing boring office work. She angrily tells him that she doesn't want to see him anymore. While lingering with the boy, Dino notices that his son is suffocating in the noble spheres in which his mother moves and conveys something of life to him. He lets people eat with his hands instead of with cutlery. At some point Dino has no more money to refuel the petrol-thirsty car and has to leave it behind. At the end of the day, he confesses to Robertino that he told a lot of lies and that he didn't get anywhere. Robertino fell in love with his father and would like to see him again. Dino calls Elsa that he will accept the job.

criticism

S. Zambetti noted that Chiari was acting “too extroverted to enable the intimate mood” that he was striving for - while “he was playing more withdrawn than usual”. In the “Cineforum” he further feared that Risi “as one of the most talented directors would burn his fingers on an overly poorly conceived script”.
