The Curse of the Black Ruby is a German-French-Italian action film from 1965 by Manfred R. Köhler with Peter Carsten and Thomas Alder in the leading roles.
action
A valuable piece of jewelery belonging to the family of the Thai Prince Gulab has been stolen from a museum in Bangkok. Immediately after the robbery, the Thai thief is shot dead by a western-looking man who takes the gold chain. The gold chain is ennobled by a black ruby. The chain has great symbolic value for Gulab; it proves that he is the rightful ruler of his dynasty. Legend has it that any illegitimate owner of this piece of jewelery will die violently. When all investigations by the Thai police come to nothing, Prince Gulab asks the international private investigator Rolf Torring for his help. He brings his friend Hans Warren and his black companion Pongo with him. On the drive from the airport into town, Warren barely escapes an acid attack. Obviously they know about the arrival of the Europeans and want to sabotage their work from the start.
Accompanied by a hand-tame monkey, the three follow the few existing tracks. They are joined by Mitra, the beautiful assistant to the museum director, who ultimately turns out to be a genuine Thai princess and heir to the throne. The hunt for jewelry in Bangkok and the Thai wilderness soon developed into a life-and-death struggle, including unpleasant encounters with tigers, snakes and trigger-happy killers. Eventually it turns out that a geologist, a certain Perkins, is behind the machinations. Perkins sees the arrangement of the gemstones as the key to uranium deposits, which he absolutely wants to get.
Production notes
The curse of the black ruby was created in late 1964 and early 1965 in Thailand (outdoor shooting in Bangkok and in the great outdoors). The film passed the FSK exam on March 31, 1965 and premiered on April 17, 1965. The television first broadcast took place late in the evening on July 13, 1974 on ARD .
Ludwig Spitaler was in charge of production. Wolf Englert designed the film structures. Eberhard Schroeder assisted director Köhler. Erwin Jenewein was responsible for the sound, Richard Richtsfeld for the special effects. Alfredo Cardone was the director of the second unit team.
Although German, Thomas Alder and Horst Frank were dubbed: Klaus Kindler spoke Alder, Rainer Brandt Frank. Peter Carsten spoke to himself.
The film sailed in the wake of the special agent and detective films that were popular in Europe at the time. Therefore, the Italian and French versions used the abbreviations commonly used in the names of the agent Torring: the agent was called S3S in the Italian version and U-92 in the French version.
Since the flick went extremely bad, especially in Germany, producer Wolf C. Hartwig buried his intention to create another adventure about the detective Torring (title: "The Revenge of the Green Scorpion"), especially with the start of the Jerry Cotton and Commissioner X-Series (also 1965) started massive (and more successful) competition in theaters.
Reviews
Paimann's film lists summed up: "This story is no better than similar ones, but wins thanks to the exotic landscape and customs captured in remarkable outdoor shots, is continuously staged, seriously played, accompanied by music as is customary in the country, beautifully color-photographed and not only somewhat worthwhile for action film lovers".
"Only reasonably exciting thriller with an abundance of folklore and equipment."
“German East Asian riot without the usual sex and with moderate cruelty. In spite of some cultural film borrowings, it is better only from 16. "
