Wolf Englert
Wolf Englert (born November 12, 1924 in Ulm ; † March 22, 1997 in Gmunden , Austria ) was a German painter , set designer and film architect , from 1953 to 1982 one of the busiest designers of German cinema and television.
Life
Englert first drew attention to himself when, at the age of 13, at the end of 1937 he got caught up in a legal case relating to homosexuality among young people, with the later resistance fighter Hans Scholl at the center of the police investigation.
As a young adult he studied art history and art in Augsburg and Munich . Englert came to the stage in 1946 and began his career as an assistant set designer. Until shortly after the currency reform , Englert worked as an outfitter for operas, drama and operettas in Würzburg . Then he went to the film studios in Bendestorf , where he assisted the experienced film architect Franz Schroedter . In 1953 Wolf Englert became the second architect under his colleague Max Mellin , and shortly afterwards sole chief architect. Over the next two decades he worked on a large number of dignified entertainment productions, which, however, were rarely high-quality. Englert designed the buildings for films by Helmut Käutner and Alfred Weidenmann , Rolf Thiele and Axel von Ambesser , Kurt Bernhardt and Alfred Vohrer .
In 1968 he shifted his activities increasingly towards television. There he was chief architect of the three leading ZDF crime series Der Kommissar , Derrick and Der Alte, as well as some ambitious crime series such as 1968 Babeck . In 1982 Wolf Englert withdrew to a large extent from the television business and settled in Montanare di Cortona, south of Arezzo , where he owned a house. He later moved to St. Konrad in Upper Austria (am Traunsee ). He returned to television for the last time in 1987 for the OW Fischer film Herbst in Lugano . In the last years of his life, Englert worked as a painter. His works (mostly watercolors ) were occasionally seen in exhibitions. Englert died in the hospital in nearby Gmunden .
