When the music plays on Lake Wörthersee is a German hit film by Hans Grimm from 1962.

action

When daughter Evelyn has danced through the night again and therefore comes home far too late, general director and jukebox manufacturer Axel Bender takes action : he sends her to a boarding school on Lake Wörthersee . This not only displeases the music-loving Evelyn, but also her shy friend Freddy Kummer, who now wants to complain to Axel. Axel, however, takes a liking to him, spontaneously complains of his suffering with his failed daughter and makes him his official jukebox representative on Lake Wörthersee. There he is actually supposed to secretly monitor Evelyn and her behavior.

Evelyn has meanwhile met the musician Hans Breuer and his band at the Wörthersee. They play regularly at Erlenhof not far from the boarding school and the girls just as often sneak out of the boarding school at night to see the band. Hans writes a song for Evelyn, which she sings in front of an audience at Erlenhof. There is tension between Hans and his girlfriend Gerti, the landlady of the Erlenhof. She, in turn, is soon comforted by Freddy, who is staying at the Erlenhof.

The annual final party in the boarding school is coming up. Since the organizer Miss Fingerl falls ill, the girls have to organize the party themselves. Usually classical music is always played, but the girls want to let Hans and his band play. Evelyn hopes that Hans can advance his career as a musician in this way, as her influential father will be among the audience. Soon Evelyn, Freddy, Gerti and Hans meet and there is a big argument between the jealous couple. Hans finally terminates the collaboration with Evelyn because he does not want to be sponsored by her and Gerti would otherwise have terminated his engagement. Evelyn and her girls now want to put on the boarding school's show on their own, just to show Hans.

Axel Bender has since found out about his daughter's love affair and has traveled to Lake Wörthersee himself. The show eventually begins and at first everything goes well. The boarding school director can be distracted and instead of classical music, hits are played. Soon, however, the performance threatens to fail - suddenly Hans and his band step in, who in turn were able to win over other artists for a performance. The evening was a great success and the boarding school director, Baroness von Grafenstein, suddenly enjoyed modern music more than classical music. Axel Bender is impressed by his daughter's ability and allows her a musical career as a singer. He is now also positive about Evelyn's marriage to Freddy - but Evelyn has long wanted to marry Hans, while Freddy and Gerti are now a couple.

criticism

The film service found that "the story [...] is only a hook for the numerous music numbers". The lexicon of international films published by film-dienst in 1990 described the film as a "mixture of slapstick, hit and teenage eroticism".

Cinema found the film "upright, stupid, banal: as dead as Papa's cinema".
