action

Intro

In a flashback at the beginning of the film, King Alexander tells his little sons, Crown Prince Jan and Prince Karel, the following family story from 100 years ago:

"A wizard invaded the kingdom and kidnapped the queen - the princes' great-great-grandmother - to his castle. The king set out to free her, but the wizard was very powerful with his wand and powers The king secretly went into the castle and broke his wand. The magician then fled to the "forbidden forest" where he is supposed to still live today. Whoever goes there will never be seen again. The king let all the sorcerer's magic in his own castle bring and lock up in a chamber that is now forbidden. "
In the next scene, in which the opening credits are faded in, you see the princes fighting with wooden swords and the younger Karel wins with the help of unclean methods.

End of the flashback and you can see the youngsters fighting with real swords and Karel wins here too through unfair behavior. It shows the good nature of Crown Prince Jan and the insidiousness of the later-born Karel.

intrigue

Karel does not want to make friends with his role as number 2 and thinks about a method to get rid of his brother without him being suspected, which is why an open murder is excluded. In search of an idea, he bribes the guards to gain access to the forbidden chamber and finds all kinds of elixirs there, including an elixir of invincibility and an elixir of oblivion, which he finds useful. To test it, he puts it in a canteen of wine and gives the guard a sip to drink, who then cannot remember anything that concerns himself.

During a ride, Karel leads the Crown Prince to the edge of the forbidden forest. There he lets him drink the wine from the canteen, whereupon Jan loses his memories ( amnesia ) and rides into the forest. His servant following him freezes into a tree when he enters the forest, which Jan does not happen for an initially unclear reason.
Karel rides back to the castle and tells his father (the king) with feigned horror that Jan rode into the forbidden forest and has been missing since then. He hypocritically offers to look for him.
Change of scene: In the forest near a hut. The magician Kruciatus is in the forest with his captured gardener and is growing a magical tree which, as soon as it is big enough, he will use to make a new wand. Now Jan appears at his place and the magician has to find out that Jan is immune to his powers because his head is almost "empty" due to the amnesia. The somewhat desperate cruciate sends Jan away again. His servant manages to secretly cut off a Y-shaped piece from the magic tree and stick it to Jan. When he leaves the forest and goes to rest the following night, he wants to put the piece of wood away, whereupon it starts to glow and thus shows its magical peculiarity. Meanwhile, Kruciatus realizes that his tree has almost reached the necessary size.

At the pond

On his hike, Jan meets a weeping man named Cecil at a pond. He tells him that his farm burned down and that his bride then called off her engagement. Jan consoles him by pointing out that she probably didn't really love him and that she was probably only concerned with the court. then he offers Cecil a sip of wine because he has no knowledge of the elixir it contains. He drinks and immediately forgets his bride and his worries. Startled by the effect, Jan dares to carefully try a drop of the wine and immediately the memory is lost again and thus also loses the knowledge of the effect of the wine with the elixir.

In the meantime Karel rides through the country on his horse and his servant Pakosta has to carry the luggage on foot. You reach an inn and hire a room there. There they write a totally lying letter to the king in which they put together a heroic search for Jan.

The Dragon

Meanwhile, Cecil and Jan reach the place with the inn. At the local market, standing with an armourer, he sees a black funeral carriage with a beautiful woman in it, although lively but dressed in mourning, and falls in love with her. Then he returns to the same dining room where Karel is staying in an upstairs room. The innkeeper tells that the beautiful woman is Princess Victoria, who has to be sacrificed to a dragon so that it does not burn the whole country down. When asked whether the guests also have money, Jan and Cecil find out that they don't have any and Cecil offers to work off the bill instead. Here the landlady and Cecil fall in love. Jan decides to save Princess Viktoria from the dragon, borrows a sword hanging on the wall of the dining room and sets off. Shortly afterwards, Karel looks out of the window, but can no longer see Jan, so that he still does not know that Jan survived the encounter with Kruciatus in the forbidden forest. Jan enters the dragon's cave and discovers Viktoria who is only apparently chained. He reveals to her that he wants to free her and they both try to escape. With the help of the magic wood carried in his breast pocket, which he holds out towards the dragon, he can ward off the fire's breath and cut off his head. Princess Viktoria falls into the arms of her rescuer and uses her cloth to bandage a wound on her upper arm from Jan.

Karel returns and Jan has amnesia again

Karel returns to his father and serves him his invented heroic deeds and proposes that the line of succession be transferred to him, which his father refuses. Meanwhile Viktoria and Jan reach a meadow and take a break. Jan hands Viktoria the canteen so that she has something to drink. Victoria notices that the bottle contains wine and refuses. This is how she escapes memory loss at the last moment. Jan goes to a spring to fetch water, and because the wine is too good to throw away, he drinks it - still unaware that the elixir is in it - of it, which immediately leads to a new loss of memory. So he does not return to Viktoria and disappears while she looks for him, but only finds the magic wood that Jan thrown away. Meanwhile, Jan meets three wanderers and is shown a search poster of himself, but neither he nor the wanderers recognize that he is the one they are looking for. So they decide to look for the crown prince together, not knowing that he is among them.

Return from Victoria

Princess Victoria reaches King Filip's father's castle in the neighboring kingdom alone. There she learns that it is a tradition to marry her to the winner of a tournament. Hoping that Jan could show up and take part, she agrees with a heavy heart. Meanwhile, Jan reaches the forbidden forest with the hikers and shortly afterwards the three boys have disappeared and only their horses remain. Jan reaches the magician Kruciatus, who is not very happy about this visit, because Jan has an "empty head" because of the renewed amnesia, and the magical powers do not work. In order to finally get rid of him, Kruciatus uses magic to find out who last had the bandage around Jan's upper arm and thus finds out that it was Princess Victoria. Because Jan is now pressing again to Viktoria, Kruciatus gives him totally rusted armor and sends him on the right path to Viktoria's castle. The canteen with the wine containing the elixir of oblivion remains with Kruciatus.

The tournament

In the meantime, Karel has found out about the upcoming tournament and goes to the castle where it is to take place. In order to win this guaranteed, he takes the bottle with the elixir of invincibility in his hand and reads on the label "Do not use internally!" So he pours it onto the tip of his lance, making it indestructible. Meanwhile, Jan rides past Cecil's restaurant in closed armor, and he realizes that this knight is wielding the sword from the wall of the restaurant and is following him. Jan arrives at the castle of Victoria's father, King Filip, just in time to register for the tournament, which causes ironic jokes due to his memory loss and rusty armor. The tournament begins. Viktoria doesn't want to watch because she doesn't know anything about Jan, who provisionally calls himself "Lavice" (Eng .: "bench"). Karel sweeps away his first opponent with the help of the enchanted lance and, with the certainty of victory, refrains from watching the other fights. So it doesn't happen that he recognizes his brother when he also defeats his opponents, because the amnesia elixir has erased his memory, but not the learned tournament fighting strength. After several rounds, Viktoria decides to attend the end of the tournament. Karel sits down on a bench next to "Lavice" and suddenly he realizes that it is his brother Jan, who was believed to be lost. However, because of the amnesia, he cannot recognize Karel as his brother, he doesn't even know that he is a Crown Prince. First, "Lavice" - in full armor and therefore not recognizable - has to defeat another opponent. After this has been successful, he stands in front of Princess Victoria and takes off the helmet. Viktoria now realizes that he has her missing rescuer and dragon slayer in front of him, an act of heroism that Jan, conversely, does not know about because of the second amnesia. In a confrontation in the castle, he therefore denies the killing of the dragon when Viktoria therefore wants to marry him by avoiding the tournament. Karel also speaks against it and so the king decides that the final should decide between Jan and Karel. Viktoria observes that Karel takes his lance to his room. She becomes skeptical, sneaks in and finds the bottle with the elixir of invincibility. But before she can examine more bottles, Karel shows up and she hides under the bed. From there, she overhears Karel talking to his servant Pakosta and thus learns the whole intrigue. Her attempt to convince her father and king of Karel's unfair methods fails, and the bottle with the elixir of invincibility breaks. This leads to a fight between Karel and his brother, who is still suffering from amnesia. Instead of his rusty armor, Jan alias "Lavice" gets a new shield and a shield to which the y-shaped magic wood is attached. In the event of a collision, Karel's lance breaks into many splinters behind the hardened area. The fight continues with the sword and Jan wins it without killing Karel. Immediately after this victory, King Alexander, the father of Karel and Jan, appears. Viktoria informs him about Karel's intrigue against Jan and shows him a fragment of the broken bottle as evidence.

epilogue

In the forbidden forest, the magician Kruciatus discovers that the magical tree is now big enough to carve a new wand out of it. He lets it down and shortly afterwards he has his new wand in his hands and swears revenge. He sends his gardener into the hut to get his amulet. There he finds the canteen and only the call of Kruciatus for him prevents him from drinking from it. Kruciatus takes the canteen and drinks it empty. Immediately he has a memory loss and he loses his magic powers. The effects of his previous sorcery cancel each other out: the gardener's chain dissolves into thin air, the people transformed into trees come to life again. The gardener takes the wand and grates it into small snippets to prevent further mischief forever. Viktoria and Jan, who visit the two, invite Kruciatus and his gardener to the wedding. At the banquet you can see everyone together. After a few pointed dialogues, the two culprits Karel and Pakosta, who got some of the food, are led away. King Filip carefully closes the forbidden chamber again and the film has a happy ending with a cheering scene at the wedding couple and the planting of the magic wood, which immediately begins to grow .
