Der Ring des Schicksals is a German silent film drama from 1916 by Richard Eichberg with Ellen Richter and Hans Mierendorff in the leading roles.

action

Shortly before his death, Professor Duyssen throws a valuable ring out of the window. He had once brought this back from India, a present from a maharaja. Duyssen wants to prevent the ring from being inherited by his daughter Margot, as this ring has so far brought nothing but bad luck to any of its owners. Two crooks, Hans von Bergen and the beggar Thomas, find the ring and decide to sell it for a profit.

The new buyer is old Count Roloff, who pays van Bergen a large sum for the precious piece of jewelry. Van Bergen is now wealthy and can marry his bride: and her name is Margot Duyssen. But she wants to see the ring, which she knows that Bergen temporarily owned, but not that he has resold it. Bergen asks the Count to give him the ring again, but he brusquely rejects his request. Van Bergen and Thomas then break into Count Roloff's.

The old count catches them both red-handed and is shot by Hans van Bergen. Van Bergen is sentenced to a long prison term, whereupon Margot divorces him. Instead she marries the young Count Roloff, Kurt. Released from prison, van Bergen breaks into Margot's house. There he sees that his ex-wife has meanwhile become a mother and lets go of his bad intentions. He steals the cursed ring to protect her and throws it into the river. Then Hans jumps after and drowns himself.
