Shark tang. The Path to Shame is a German feature film by Richard Eichberg from 1930. After Schmutziges Geld (1928) and Großstadtschmetterling (1929) it was Eichberg's third film with the important Chinese-American actress Anna May Wong , and their first talked about film together. The world premiere took place on February 26, 1930 .

action

In pre-revolutionary Russia, the young Chinese variety singer Hai-Tang falls in love with the dashing officer Boris. This love becomes complicated, however, when Boris' commander, a Grand Duke, also casts an eye on Hai-Tang. Hai-Tang's brother Wang Hu tries to fend off the Grand Duke's advances and shoots at him. Wang Hu is sentenced to death, but gets away when Hai-Tang declares that she would rather be evicted from the country with her brother than become the Grand Duke's lover. In doing so, however, she also renounces happiness with her beloved forever.

Language versions

Like many other films of the early sound film era, “Hai-Tang” was shot in several language versions , each with different cast. In all three versions, Anna May Wong, for whom this was the first speaking role, appeared in the female lead. Ley On played Hai-Tang's brother Wang Hu in all versions.

In the English version ("The Flame of Love") John Longden played Lieutenant Boris and Georg H. Schnell played the Grand Duke. Eichberg was assisted with the direction by Walter Summers , who had also co-written the English-language script.

The male protagonists of the French version ("Haï-Tang") were Robert Ancelin and Marcel Vibert . Eichberg's co-director was Jean Kemm , the French dialogues came from Pierre Maudru .

The German-language version was evaluated by the American distribution company Capitol Film Exchange Inc.

Film music

As was customary in the early sound film era, “Hai-Tang” also received two big titles that Hans May composed. Fritz Rotter wrote the lyrics . They were played by prominent bands and distributed on gramophone records.
