The Rufer is a bronze sculpture by Gerhard Marcks . It stands on the Schlachte in Bremen in front of the Weserhaus of Radio Bremen .

history

For the location of the new television building in Bremen-Osterholz, in 1966 Radio Bremen absolutely wanted a work by Gerhard Marcks, who had already created a symbol for the city with his sculpture by the Bremen Town Musicians . The artist's suggestion: I'll make you a caller . The sculpture should represent the task of radio and television as timelessly as possible. Marcks: If I put someone there with the television, it will look pretty stupid in ten years, because then the televisions will be much better. On the other hand, this calling out, putting the message into the world has always remained the same, whether it is now with the Greeks or today. And Marcks tried to symbolize this with the Rufer, for which he was commissioned in 1966.

sculpture

The three meter high bronze sculpture weighing 700  kg holds the hands around the corners of his mouth to reinforce his reputation. The figure is based on the figure of the Stentor from the Iliad , which is attributed to the poet Homer . There it says his voice is as loud as that of fifty other men put together.

The Rufer was inaugurated on November 24, 1967 on the grounds of the television studio on Hans-Bredow-Straße, where it stood for almost forty years on its pedestal next to the editorial building and looked towards the city center. With the abandonment of the location, the caller also had to move. His new address: Hinter der Mauer 7, 28195 Bremen.

Meanwhile, more casts by the Rufer are also calling out in Perth , Australia , on the median of Berliner Straße des 17. Juni , in front of a publishing house in Essen and in the garden of the Bundesbank's headquarters in Frankfurt am Main .

New location

Before moving to the Schlachte , next to the new Radio Bremen building in the Stephani district, a rusted iron girder in the right shin had to be replaced. And to protect against fine dust and acid rain, the figure was given a wax coating. What is new is the rotatable bearing, with which the viewing direction can be changed. Whenever the TV shows 3 to 9 , the caller will look into the studio through the glass front, then he will call his news again via the Weser.

On November 23, 2007, the bronze sculpture was inaugurated a second time during a ceremony. Director Glässgen said : “The Rufer is now given a prominent location in Bremen - like Radio Bremen in the middle of the city, accessible to people and visible from afar. His call for peace and freedom of expression should be audible from his new place in front of the Radio Bremen studio and broadcasting building far across the Weser, above all through the broadcaster's broadcasts and programs. "
