The Singing Bar is a Berlin band specializing in chanson , folk , jazz and song theater. This mix is referred to by the band as “curfew music”. The band was formed in 2001.

history

The Singing Bar was founded in 2001 by singer Manja Präkels on the occasion of the first Berlin Erich Mühsam Festival . Until 2004 the band was one of the regular artists of Dr. Strange club existentialiste . Since then, the band has been touring throughout Germany and playing at festivals such as Bardentreffen Nürnberg, TFF Rudolstadt , Grimmaer Liederflut , Festival Music and Politics , Songs on a Summer Evening , Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival .

In 2005, the first official CD curfew music was released , which immediately became CD of the month on the best song list for German-language music run by music critics . The title song of the same name on the follow-up CD "Clowns in the Rain" (2007) topped the list of best songs for German-language music in June 2007. The stage program for the new CD "No Part of Something" premiered in 2008 at the International Brecht Festival in Augsburg ( abc Festival ).

Music and lyrics

In the early years, the music of the Singing Bar could still be aptly described as acoustic folk punk , which the early EP Hundsgemeines Leben is testament to. With the addition of clarinetist Thorsten Müller, Klezmer elements were increasingly added, which then also shaped the first official CD curfew music. With double bass player Benjamin Hiesinger and vibraphonist Lilia Antico, the band also opened up to jazzy tones, while singer and lyricist Manja Präkels increasingly brought in song theater elements that can already be heard clearly on the second CD "Clowns in the Rain". The lyrics and music moved further and further away from the rebellious stance of the first few years without losing any of their political weight, as the 2008 stage program No Part of Something testifies to. Inspired by Bertolt Brecht's early piece In the Thicket of Cities , Der Singende Bar designed here - using Berlin as an example - a modern metropolitan image between progress and impoverishment. The CD of the same name was released in April 2009. With the following CDs "Ernste Musik" (2012) and "Mühsamblues" (2014), a homage to the anarchist poet Erich Mühsam , The Singing Bar struck harder again.
