Der Tiefstapler is a German comedy film from 1978 with Gert Fröbe and Georg Thomalla .

action

When the German development aid minister does not arrive as expected on his announced visit to an unspecified Latin American country, the German ambassador persuades two tourists to step in for him. Both should give the ministerial couple. The man is supposed to be a manufacturer of rollpots, but who is actually a professor. The other German is mistaken for a prostitute, but is actually a doctor. This constellation results in numerous entanglements in which both the Germans and the Latin Americans act extremely idiotic.

Production notes

The low loader , manufactured by two unknown companies from Frankfurt am Main and Königstein, was created within 30 days of shooting between October 13 and November 25, 1977 in Seville and the surrounding area. The world premiere took place on May 11, 1978 in Bonn .

Director Bieber, who withdrew his name after the completion of the film, had learned his trade as an assistant director at DEFA and made a name for himself as a respectable television film director. After Der Tiefstapler , he completely disappeared from the public eye.

As a result of the disastrous production result, the distributor withdrew the film from the cinemas at the beginning of July 1978.

criticism

The film is considered to be one of the most unsuccessful and most terrible German productions ever. The few reviews of the film at most varied the strength of their reviews. Here are two exemplary examples:

The Lexicon of International Films wrote : "The incompetent authors of the bland little film understand developing countries as banana republics, their politicians as batches of operettas, their residents as caricatures and cretins."

Kay Wenigers The film's great personal dictionary saw Der Tiefstapler simply as a “low point in German filmmaking”.
