Death and the Maiden

Death and the Maiden is both a gruesome and erotic motif that has been used in various genres since the 16th century, for example in painting, literature and music, and recently also in film. The personalized death occurs as a seducer, or even as a lover of a young woman.

- Death and the Maiden , String Quartet No. 14 in D minor D 810 by Franz Schubert (1824). The quartet owes its name to the theme of the second movement, which comes from the art song composed by Schubert. The Schubert string quartet ismentionedas a sort of leitmotif in Martin Walser's novel Brandung . A modern interpretation (2007) of the theme by Franz Schubert comes from the music project Bacio di Tosca .
