The Daredevil is an adventure film that was made in 1966 as a South African-American co-production.
action
Africa in the 19th century. A hunter prepares for a safari in the African jungle. The rudeness of the safari participants causes the "natives" of a tribe whose territory the safari touches to attack. Except for the hunter, all whites are captured and tortured to death. The hunter gets the "Lion's Chance", an old survival game in which the natives hunt the captive. Hunters are only natives who have killed at least ten lions.
The white hunter tries to outrun his pursuers. In order not to starve, he eats raw plants, snakes and preyed food. With cunning he always manages to escape an impending encirclement. Fighting ensues with his pursuers, in which he kills some of the natives. After days of pursuit, the hunter sighted a mission station. With a little need he can escape to the station and to safety. When he looks back, he sees the tribal chief respectfully greeting him goodbye.
criticism
The lexicon of international films described the film as "an exciting adventure film with some rigors that offers some beautiful landscape shots and is also above the majority of the genre in other respects ".
Dave Kehr of Chicago Reader felt the film as a reasonably sophisticated and well filmed.
For Ken Hanke of Mountain Xpress , it was obvious that the film wanted to be more than just a jungle adventure. But even the red color as a blood substitute does not make it more convincing than the average Tarzan film . As an adventure it is entertaining.
Awards
In 1967 , Clint Johnston and Don Peters were nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
background
The film is one of the few US productions that appeared in Germany earlier (February 17, 1966) than in the USA itself (June 14, 1966).
The film was shot in the Kruger National Park in South Africa , in what was then Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe ) and in what was then Bechuanaland (now Botswana ).
The film was produced by Sven Perssons Films and Theodora Productions . An estimated budget of $ 900,000 was available. Paramount Pictures took over the distribution , the television rights were awarded to the broadcaster ABC .
The script originally told the story of the trapper John Colter , who was attacked and captured by Blackfoot Indians . They (allegedly) let him run for his life, with Colter escaping them. Lower costs and logistical support, which were guaranteed by the South African government, meant that the script was rewritten for African conditions.
