The Beheaded Rooster is the film adaptation of the novel The Beheaded Rooster by the German-speaking writer and pastor Eginald Schlattner, who lives in Romania .

content

The place of the action is Fogarasch , a city in the area of the Transylvanian Saxons in Romania. The story describes the experiences of four young people during the Second World War .

Felix, son of an entrepreneurial family, is torn between the Church and the Hitler Youth , between his love for the Jewess Gisela and his enthusiasm for the National Socialist ideology. Felix's best friend Hans Adolf, son of the chimney sweep who advertises Alfa Sigrid, the daughter of a Saxon landowner, is also enthusiastic about the latter.

Felix's father is against the Nazis and helps Gisela's father to escape from Fagarash. His son initially turns away from Gisela and becomes a squad leader in the Hitler Youth. When the timid and sensitive entrepreneur's son makes a mistake, he is replaced by the fanatical Hans Adolf. In addition, his feelings for Gisela break out again after visiting her in her refuge. Felix also prefers the confirmation ceremony to the exercise with the Nazi group. Nor can he resist the charms of Alfa Sigrid, who plays the two boys off against each other.

On August 23, 1944, the four of them gathered with other young people in the house of Felix's family for the Exitusfest, the big graduation party. On this day, the Kingdom of Romania broke away from allied Nazi Germany in the face of the advancing Red Army, and German bombers attacked Fagarash during the celebration. The celebrants then seek refuge in the bunker of Felix's family's house. Worrying about her mother, Gisela runs away from the bunker. Felix never sees her again afterwards. The end of the settlement history of the Transylvanian Saxons has come, but Felix will remain in the land of his ancestors for the next few decades.

criticism

“(TV) drama about friendship, hope, love and betrayal, which suffers from the mediocre staging and the overwhelmed young actors. The color scheme, which changes abruptly with the end of the German settlement glory, takes getting used to. "
