The German Cosplay Championship ( DCM for short ) is an annual nationwide competition to determine the national cosplay masters.

When Cosplay it comes to a Manga - Anime or - computer game as faithfully as possible represent -Figur at a stage appearance by costume and behavior.

aims

The goals of the DCM are to organize a competition that is as fair and transparent as possible and sees itself as a representative and contact person for cosplay in Germany.

The aim of the initiators is to offer the scene a presentation platform and to bring Japanese pop culture closer to the public. In addition to awarding Germany's best cosplayers, the DCM wants to establish media contacts, develop national evaluation standards and support fair play between cosplayers.

History and structure

In 2007 the Frankfurt Book Fair initiated the German Cosplay Championship together with the Animexx association . Since then, the best cosplayers have been determined every year in nationwide preliminary decisions, who will contest the finals in October at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

Up to and including 2009, the German Cosplay Championship took place as an individual championship.

Since 2010 it has been held in an annually alternating individual and pair championship and the winners are no longer awarded separately according to gender.

In 2016, a combined single and pair championship will take place for the 10th anniversary of the championship.

In 2017, the DCM started a pair championship according to the usual rhythm.

In 2019, the DCM set of rules was completely redesigned and updated to reflect the times.

Competitive conditions

Appearance of a cosplayer at the preliminary round of the 1st German Cosplay Championship in Frankfurt / Main (2007)

Admission

Participants in the DCM must be at least 16 years old (with parental permission, younger), DCM employees must be at least 18 years and DCM jury members must be at least 21 years old.

rating

The participants are rated in four categories:

  • In the case of similarity , the jury assesses how closely the costume matches the template (especially with regard to color scheme, design and proportions of the figure). The rating ranges from 1 point (low similarity) to 6 points (exact match).
  • The design is about the manual implementation of the costume (materials, cutting and sewing patterns, processing techniques). The rating ranges from 1 point (poor implementation) to 6 points (perfect, very well thought-out implementation).
  • The presentation of the costume on stage will also be assessed. Relevant criteria are the representation of the character traits of the figure as well as the coherence and the fluency of the presentation. The rating ranges from 1 point (simply standing on the stage) to 6 points (very good presentation).
  • In the audience reaction, the strength of the audience's reaction is assessed in the form of 6 possible reaction levels.

placement

Each member of the jury first adds up the points awarded in the areas of similarity, style and presentation for each participant and creates a descending table of results. In the event of a tie, the audience's reaction decides; if this is also the same for the participants concerned, the final decision is at the discretion of the jury member. The first placed participant in the table receives 10 table points, the second placed 9 table points etc., the 10th place receives 1 table point. All other places receive 0 table points.

For the final result, all table points of all jury members are added up for each participant. The participant with the highest number of points in the table wins.
