VfB Friedrichshafen started as the defending champion. TSV Bad Saulgau, Volley Dogs Berlin and Moerser SC came from the second division. At the VC Olympia, the junior national team played “out of competition” because they were excluded from the play-off games and the decision in the relegation battle.
Season course
In the main round, Friedrichshafen suffered its only defeat at 2: 3 in Unterhaching. In the end, TSV reached third place in the table behind SCC Berlin, which only lost to the defending champion at home. Behind this trio were Düren and Wuppertal, each ten points behind. Mendig also qualified for the play-offs. Moers had no win away from home and had to be relegated after a relegation tournament against the Volley Dogs and Eltmann.
In the quarter-finals, Wuppertal and Unterhaching were able to prevail with two wins each in the best-of-three and in the semifinals they met the seeded teams of SCC and VfB. While Unterhaching failed after three games in Berlin, Bayer ensured that the defending champion was eliminated. Friedrichshafen secured third place after five championship titles in a row. The successors to VfB were the Charlottenburgers, who became German champions for the second time since 1993.
