Play-down (relegation round)

In the 2009/10 season, a relegation round (playdown) was held for the first time among the teams in places 9-12 in the main round. The points from the main round were taken into the relegation round. Due to the forced relegation of the Eschenbacher Volleys Bamberg, only the last three participants took part in the relegation round this season. The RWE Volleys Bottrop in ninth place in the main round moved up as a play-off participant for Bamberg.

The play-downs were played in "everyone against everyone" mode. The three teams played two back and forth round matches, making a total of six matches. The last placed in the relegation round rose to the 2nd Bundesliga.
