The SCC Berlin competed as the defending champion. Dachau and Moers came from the second division. At the VC Olympia, the junior national team played “out of competition” because they were excluded from the play-off games and the decision in the relegation battle.

Season course

First, the twelve teams played a qualifying round in which everyone competed once, either at home or away. Friedrichshafen survived this round without defeat. SCC Berlin only lost the game over five sets at VfB. In addition to Düren and Unterhaching, Leipzig and newly promoted Moers were each able to qualify for the top league round with a two point lead.

In the round of the six best teams, all teams competed against each other twice. VfB and SCC defeated each other at their home games. Although Friedrichshafen also lost in Leipzig, they stayed ahead of the Charlottenburgers because of the better set ratio . Unterhaching won only twice and slipped from fourth to sixth place in the table.

In the lower half, Wuppertal and Mendig reached the play-offs . The Volley Dogs Berlin could not prevent relegation, although they managed five wins. Dachau only won once and accompanied the Berliners back to the second division.

In the quarter-finals, Friedrichshafen and Berlin were able to prevail confidently. Moers also reached the semi-finals, but was inferior to VfB there. The MSC won the game for 3rd place against Berlin. Düren was in the quarter-finals against Unterhaching after the home defeat away with 0: 2 sets and managed to turn things around. In the semifinals evivo won in Berlin and ensured with a 3-2 home win both for the defending champion and for the first final participation in the club's history. There, however, the Düren team had no chance against Friedrichshafen, which became German champions for the first time since 2002.
