Around the mountain is an Important Bird Area designated by BirdLife International . In 1982 the region was classified as the third most important area of East Timor for the protection of biodiversity. Since 2000, 15,000 of the 34,452 hectares have been protected as a game reserve. In addition, there is a high socio-economic value, among other things because there is a watershed here.
The region is hilly and forested except for the mountains. The ridges are covered with scrubland and eucalyptus trees. In the lower regions, the monsoon forest is locally patchy.
