Dibenzo [ a , h ] anthracene is a chemical compound from the group of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and contains five linked six-membered rings.

Occurrence

Dibenzo [ a , h ] anthracene occurs ubiquitously as a pollutant in the environment (e.g. in tobacco smoke ) because it is a product of incomplete combustion of organic substances. It is largely associated with particulate matter, soils, and sediments. Its occurrence in places far from primary sources shows that it is relatively stable in the atmosphere and can be transported over long distances. In soils it is very strongly adsorbed and therefore not hydrolyzed and not released into the groundwater or the air. Biodegradation in soils has a half-life of 18 and 21 days. People are contaminated by polluted fine dust through breathing, ingested water or food.

This is why the compound is one of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that are monitored as relevant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons for the determination of benzo [ a ] pyrene emissions at a limited number of sampling points of the Federal Environment Agency .
