Dickinson is a city in Galveston County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

geography

The city is centrally located in the county, in southeast Texas, 45 km from Houston , 31 km from Galveston and in the southeast 12 km from the Gulf of Mexico .

history

In 1824 the Mexican government gave John Dickinson permission to take possession of the land and before 1850 there was a small settlement named after him. In 1850, the Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad moved their tracks through the town. During the American Civil War in 1863 General John Bankhead Magruder used the same railway line to relieve Galveston.

According to the 2000 census, 17,093 people lived here in 6,162 households and 4,522 families. The population density was 683.9 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 72.35% White, 10.52% African American, 0.64% Native American, 1.21% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, and 12.82% other ethnic groups. About 2.43% were mixed race and 24.90% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 6,162 households, 36.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.4% of these were married couples living together. 13.0% were single mothers and 26.6% were non-families. 21.6% of all households were single households and there were people living in 6.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.22.

28.5% of the population were under 18 years old, 9.6% 18 to 24, 30.5% 25 to 44, 21.8% 45 to 64, and 9.6% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 99.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 98.2 men.

The median income for a household in the 41,984 USD , and the median income for a family 46,585 USD. Males had a median income of $ 36,391 versus $ 26,943 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,785. 13.1% of the population and 9.5% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 17.6% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 7.2% were 65 or older.
