The development of socialism from utopia to science is a paper by Friedrich Engels first published in 1880 . According to Marx , this work is, so to speak, an “introduction to scientific socialism ”.

Origin and publication history

The 40-page long script, which is based on three chapters of the Anti-Dühring , was written between January and mid-March 1880. Paul Lafargue translated the script into French and added a few remarks. The writing first appeared in French, in the magazine "La Revue socialiste", in three parts on March 20, April 20 and May 5, 1880. In the same year Marx wrote a preface to the writing. The text was also published again as a brochure in Paris under the title “Socialisme utopique et socialisme scientifique” . In 1882 the script was translated into Polish. In March 1883 the first German-language edition with a foreword by Engels appeared in Zurich . In 1883 an Italian edition appeared in Benevento , in 1884 a Russian edition in Geneva , in 1885 a Danish edition in Copenhagen, and in 1886 a Spanish edition in Madrid and a Dutch edition in Hague . In 1891 a fourth German edition appeared in Berlin , with which, according to Engels, including the first three editions, a total of around 20,000 copies of the font were published in Germany. An English-language edition followed in 1892 with a foreword by Engels. By 1895, Engels published this font in 14 languages and a total of 57 editions in whole or in part. Translated into more than 70 languages by 1981.

At the request of my friend Paul Lafargue ... I set up three chapters [of the Anti-Dühring] as a brochure, which he translated and published in 1880 under the title "Socialisme utopique et socialisme scientifique". A Polish and a Spanish edition were organized according to this French text. In 1883 our German friends published the brochure in the original language. Since then, Italian, Russian, Danish, Dutch and Romanian translations have been published based on the German text. Together with this English edition, this small font is distributed in ten languages. I do not know that any other socialist work, not even our " Communist Manifesto " of 1848 or Marx's " Capital ", has been translated so many times. In Germany it has seen four editions totaling around 20,000 copies. - Engels, Introduction [to the English edition (1892) of the "Development of Socialism from Utopia to Science"]

The Marxists Internet Archive makes the script available in 14 languages. The Marx-Engels-Werke follow the fourth German edition completed by Engels. The online catalog of the German National Library contains around 200 publications of the font, beginning in 1883 and ending in 2009.
