The woman behind the counter (original title: Žena za pultem ) is a Czechoslovak television series that focuses on the experiences of the saleswoman Anna Holubová. The scripts for the series were written by Jaroslav Dietl and directed by Jaroslav Dudek .

The series tells the story of the Prague saleswoman Anna Holubová. This takes in the first episode her work as head of the delicatessen department in a department store in Prague district Smíchov on. A change of residence and a new job - Anna Holubová had previously managed a department store in another part of Prague - are supposed to mark a new beginning in her life after the divorce from her husband.
Anna is an accomplished professional. Because of this and her open and honest character, she quickly gains the trust of her colleagues and superiors. It has to assert itself against some imponderables.
The series begins around the New Year and extends over a year. The series is divided into 12 parts, each part being assigned to a month. This is not only made clear by showing the name of the month. The plot itself also relates to seasonal events. For example, in the third episode (March) International Women's Day is celebrated and Easter is celebrated.

A real department store on the Square of October 14th (Czech. Náměstí 14. října ) in the Smíchov district of Prague served as the location for many of the exterior shots . This department store no longer exists; it has since been demolished. In their place there is now a modern office building. The heroine Anna's apartment was in the Vinohrady district of Prague .
