action

One prophecy says that when the stars of the northern sky are born again, the one who smashes the ice with the black sword that covers the crystal green stone from the crown of darkness will get possession of the stone. If he even puts the crown on his head, he becomes the ruler of the world and nothing would be the same as before. The water would turn to crystal, the sun would be wrapped in frost, the moon would turn pale to silver and time would stand still.

On a beach, while playing in a dune , the children Gerda and Kai find a music box with a ballerina and three golden buttons. Gerda receives the music box, Kai receives the three golden buttons. At night, Kai is fetched by the Snow Queen, who takes him to her realm in her flying horse-drawn sleigh . On the way she takes the three buttons from him, which then begin to glow and so she throws the cold down on the earth. The next morning Gerda is saddened by Kai's disappearance. When she finds one of Kai's buttons on the street, she decides to go looking for him.

With a boat she is lured into the water kingdom ruled by a lonely witch, where Gerda is made to forget her plan with the help of bewitched sugar hearts so that the lonely does not remain so alone. Gerda discovered the witch's secret and from then on only pretended to eat the sugar hearts. The rose girls appear to her, telling her that all the girls who come to the witch's realm have to dance for her and obey her commands or they are turned into roses on the walls. They also advise Gerda to sneak away while the witch is sleeping. She follows the advice, is caught, but can still escape, whereupon the lonely woman immediately passes away and the rose girls are redeemed. In the realm of the Snow Queen, the cold has meanwhile managed to turn Kai into an icy prince. She tells the egg prince that she likes him and asks him to smash the ice that covers the green stone and bring her the stone that would restore her old strength to the crown of darkness, making him ruler the world could rise.

Meanwhile, Gerda continues looking for Kai and finds a second one of his buttons. She is advised of a castle in which he is supposed to live as the lover of a princess, but finds out there that this quay is not her quay. The princess gives her a new hairstyle, a new dress and a present for Kai as well as a few men and horses for her further journey. However, the community is attacked by robbers who kidnap Gerda. She loses the princess's gifts to the outlaws, but finds Kai's third button in their camp. When the robbers are asleep, she steals a flying magic reindeer , with which she heads north to the icy realm of the Snow Queen.

On the way there, Gerda is pushed by the magical skills of the cold-hearted first from her reindeer sleigh and then into a crevice, where she meets the sorceress of the north. Her equal to the Snow Queen tells Gerda that once, when the earth was still confused and desolate and light and darkness were struggling with one another, a magical, green stone fell from the crown of darkness into a spring, where it froze to ice. The Snow Queen tries to get the crystal back because her power would slowly be exhausted without him, but she would last forever with him. However, she cannot get the stone out of the spring herself, as all the water in it would freeze as soon as she got too close. Someone whose hands warmth, a person, needs it for this. So she kidnapped Kai and made him an egg prince so that he could break the ice on the spring with the black sword at a certain hour. Gerda also learns that should Kai put on the crown of darkness, he would freeze to ice. Then the sorceress gives her a white invisibility cloak and the courageous Gerda sets off to become the Snow Queen.

At the right time, Kai is made to break the ice on the spring by the Snow Queen. Gerda, who arrives shortly afterwards, is exposed by the cold witch. Desperate, Gerda takes Kai's hand to make him run away, but he Eisige shows no emotion. When the witch tries to attack Gerda, she throws these two of Kai's buttons at her, which are transformed into fireballs by the power of good that is inherent in them. But the cold doesn't hold up for long and so Gerda is frozen. So the Snow Queen starts to put the crown she has received on her head, when Kai wakes up to Gerda's faint calls and the third of his buttons, which landed in his hand when Gerda touched and with the help of the magic button can the dark one Crown to be destroyed.
