The sun that deceives us ( Russian Утомлённые солнцем Utomljonnyje solnzem , German: "Those tired of the sun" ) is a Russian drama directed by Nikita Michalkow from 1994.
action
The film is primarily about a Soviet family in the summer of 1936. The high-ranking division commander Sergei Petrovich Kotow, father of little daughter Nadja and husband of Marija, receives his old friend Dimitrij, who used to have a close relationship with Marija, in the family home. In order to get rid of his rival at the time, the revolutionary hero Kotov once forced his opponent Dimitrij into the NKVD , on whose behalf he then had to spy on the Paris emigrant circles. After returning to Russia, it is now time to settle the old score with Kotow. The meanwhile respected agent of the NKVD takes revenge on Kotow by playing cat and mouse with him and finally arranging for his removal - as part of the Great Terror of the summer of 1936. After a forced confession, Kotow is shot in 1936. At the end of the film, Dimitrij can be seen dying by suicide. Marija is arrested and dies in the 1940 gulag. Nadia, who was also arrested, survives and is released during the Khrushchev era.
The song
The song, which is heard several times during the film, was originally a Polish tango with the title Ta ostatnia niedziela (This is our last Sunday) . In the Soviet Union it got a new text and became Утомлённое солнце (Those who are tired of the sun). In fact, however, the Russian-language version used in the film didn't appear until 1937, while the plot takes place in 1936.

The sun that deceives us was nominated in 1994 by the European Film Academy as "Film of the Year". In the same year, the film won the Grand Jury Prize and the Ecumenical Jury Prize at the Cannes International Film Festival and was awarded an Oscar in 1995 for best foreign-language film .
According to the website imdb.com, the film was nominated for the Italian film prize "David di Donatello" as the best foreign language film. It was also nominated for the BAFTA Award (Great Britain) for best foreign language film, as well as for the Australian Film Institute and the film critic award in Argentina.

In 2010 Nikita Michalkow filmed Utomljonnyje solnzem 2, a continuation of his Oscar-winning work, in which he again took on one of the leading roles alongside Oleg Menshikov , who again played the role of the still living Dimitrij. The sequel was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. In Germany it received the title The Sun That Deceives Us - The Exodus . The film is set in 1941 during the Second World War , in which Kotow has to prove himself as the commander of a punitive battalion. A year later, another part appeared in 2011, which concluded the film series as a trilogy. In The Sun That Deceives Us - The Citadel , Kotow continues to be the commander of the punitive battalion that is supposed to take a German fortress in 1945.
