Die Walsche is a television film by Werner Masten from 1986. It tells the love story between a South Tyrolean and an Italian who are caught up in the history of their home countries. In the tension between the two ethnic groups, their relationship is put to a major test.
action
Olga works in a bar and likes to philosophize with the guests, who, however, have little sense of such sophisticated entertainment. In the middle of these conversations, Olga receives news of her father's death. Her friend Silvano would like to accompany her to the funeral, but Olga vehemently refuses. As an Italian, he is not welcomed in Tyrol and she constantly has to justify herself to her family for her love for him, which she would like to spare herself this time. Although fascism should actually have been defeated, Tyrol is of the opinion that it must protect itself from " corruption ". A large part of the population also rejects “mixed marriages” by Tyroleans and Italians. Olga has to hear from her brother that their relationship drove her father to his death. Olga suffers from it, which has a great effect on her mood and she often argues with Silvano.
Silvano also senses the Tyroleans' rejection of him when he accompanies Olga on a visit to her mother. It is inevitable that they quarrel again on the way back. Olga has to go back to her home village several times to organize the funeral for her father. The villagers make it clear to her that she is not welcome.
Nevertheless, Olga and Silvano cannot imagine a life without each other. Their love is put to the test again when Olga miscarries.
background
The film is based on the story of the same name by Joseph Zoderer from 1982. The translation into Italian, in particular, is very popular in South Tyrol against the background of the relationship between the German-speaking and Italian-speaking ethnic groups.
The topic of discussion is the discrimination of a woman in a German-speaking community in South Tyrol who enters into a relationship with an Italian -speaking , connected with the question of identity and home.
Reviews
“The film advocates equal rights for different population groups, but initially argues in an all too undifferentiated and clichéd manner; only in the second half does he find denser and deeper plumbing scenes. "
Awards
In 1987 Joseph Zoderer and Werner Masten received the television film award of the German Academy of Performing Arts for Die Walsche . The film was awarded the Prize of the Confederation Internationale Cinema d'Art et d'Essai at the 39th Locarno International Film Festival in 1986 .
