Joseph Zoderer

Life

Zoderer spent the first years of his life in South Tyrol. As part of the option in South Tyrol , the family moved to Graz in 1940 , where Joseph Zoderer spent his childhood. In 1948 the now 13-year-old became a student at the grammar school in Widnau (Switzerland).

When his family returned home in 1949, Zoderer did not accompany them. He attended the Widnau grammar school for another three years before returning to South Tyrol. There followed stays in various high schools. Finally graduated Zoderer 1957 in Merano .

From 1957 to 1963 Zoderer studied law, philosophy, theater studies and psychology at the University of Vienna, but broke off these studies again. At the same time he worked as a journalist for Kurier , the Kronen Zeitung and Die Presse . Zoderer's first poetry and short prose publications appeared at the end of the 1950s. The South Tyrolean first attracted public attention in 1974 with a collection of socially critical dialect poetry . He made his official debut as a novelist in 1976 with The Luck When Washing Hands , although according to Zoderer's The Other Hill (published in 1995) is his first novel. After participating in the Austrian Youth Culture Weeks in 1965 and 1969, Zoderer began to do more literary work. In 1970 he toured Canada, the USA and Mexico. In 1971 Zoderer became radio editor at Rai Sender Bozen , before he decided to work as a freelance writer in 1981.

From 1981 to 1982 Zoderer was a founding member of the South Tyrolean Authors 'Association , and since then he has been a member of the Graz Authors' Assembly . The South Tyrolean writer has also been a corresponding member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry in Darmstadt since 1993 .

Zoderer's literary work includes prose (novels, short stories) as well as poetry, a total of three volumes of short stories, five volumes of poetry and nine novels have been published to date. In addition, the children's book When Anja went towards the Christ Child was published in 1996 , illustrated by Linda Wolfsgruber .

The author, who describes himself as a “German author with Austrian cultural stamps and an Italian passport”, devotes himself again and again to the so-called “South Tyrol theme”, a life between two cultures that almost inevitably leads to an identity crisis. Zoderer's best-known novel Die Walsche , which achieved the status of a bestseller in Italy, deals with this topic, with the rigid cultural boundaries and the unwillingness of people to mentally attend to strangers serving as points of criticism. Since the publication of this novel in 1982, Zoderer has been one of the most important authors in South Tyrol. His books have been translated into Italian, French, Slovenian, Chinese, Russian and Japanese. The novels Das Glück beim Handwaschen and Die Walsche were also successfully filmed for television, Die Walsche also successfully adapted as a theater play.

A general characteristic of the extensive prose work is the fact that many of the author's material elements show parallels to his biography, as can be seen in the topics that are often taken up, such as the post-war period, foreigners, South Tyrol, boarding school life etc.
