The Extraordinary Adventures of Saturnino Farandola is a French-Italian fantastic adventure film directed by Marcel Fabre from 1913 . The fragmentarily preserved silent film is based on the parody of the novel Voyages très extraordinaires de Saturnin Farandoul (dans les 5 ou 6 parties du monde et dans tous les pays connus et même inconnus) by M. Jules Verne by Albert Robida , which was published in 1879.

action

The Monkey Island (L'isola delle scimie)

Barnaba Farandola's sailing ship “Delfino” from Marseille is in distress in the Pacific Ocean . Barnaba's wife Sofia and their son Saturnino, who is still a baby, are also on board. Shortly before the ship goes down, both manage to hand Saturnino over to the waves in a small boat and with a message that the ship has ended. It is washed ashore on a monkey island and taken in by the primates . Seventeen years later, Saturnino Farandola has grown into a strong man who, unlike the other monkeys, has not grown a tail. Therefore, he is marginalized by his fellow monkeys and eventually flees the island. The crew of the ship "Bella Leocadia" under the direction of Captain Lombrico rescues him and learns his fate from the message that his parents wrote 17 years ago and that Saturnino is still carrying with them.

After a year on the "Bella Leocadia", Saturnino has become a capable sailor . Pirates raid the ship and take the crew prisoner. On the pirate island, Saturnino succeeds in freeing all the men, but in the ensuing battle with the pirates, Captain Lombrico is killed. Saturnino himself is elected as the new captain of the "Bella Leocadia".

Saturnino and his lover Mysora are later on a dive together. While he is fighting a giant clam to steal its large pearl, Mysora is devoured by a whale. Despite the chase with a rowboat, Saturnino and his men fail to catch up with the whale.

The whale runs aground and is acquired by Professor Croknuff, director of the large Melbourne aquarium . In the aquarium, Mysora succeeds in crawling out of the whale and escaping from the aquarium to Croknuff's study. Saturnino reads about this miraculous incident in the newspaper and goes to see Director Croknuff, who however refuses to release Mysora. Croknuff has locked the woman back in the aquarium and hopes to conduct scientific studies on her. Saturnino declares war on Croknuff and returns to Monkey Island, where he trains his former roommates to become soldiers. He and his men and monkeys eventually attack Croknuff's "fortress". This destroyed the aquarium with a bomb and was devoured by a released octopus. Mysora is injured in the explosion, but survives.

In search of the white elephant (Alla ricerca dell 'elefante bianco)

Saturnino and Mysora have now married and are traveling on the liner "America". They read in the newspaper that the king of Siam's white elephant , who is highly venerated as the incarnation of Buddha, has disappeared . Police Minister Nao-Ching's search brought no results; 20 million Tiko (2,400,000 sterling or 60,000,000 francs) are offered for the replacement of the elephant. Saturnino, Mysora and the sailors want to get the white elephant back and go to Nao-Ching in the royal palace in Bangkok , who disarms the guests and lures them into an ambush. Nao-Ching himself kidnapped the elephant and sells it to the mandarin of San-Kiù. During the battle of the sailors for Saturnino with the men of San-Kiù, Mysora is taken hostage. Saturnino and the sailors are ambushed, arrested and sentenced to death. Thanks to Mysora's help, they can escape and later free Mysora and the elephant again. The King of Siam keeps his word and pays Saturnino and his colleagues the reward they have been awarded.

[The episode about the Makalolo queens] (La regina dei Makalolos)

A month later, Saturnino and Mysora drive along the Nile and, in bear costume, save the two queens of the Makalolo people from the barbaric Niam-Niam, who were supposed to be eaten by them. The four of them end up in the savannah, where they are threatened by lions that Saturnino dressed in a spiky costume can chase away. Returning to the common resting place after a successful hunt, he meets neither the two queens nor Mysora. They were kidnapped by gorillas , but Saturnino can soothe them with the monkey language he learned in childhood and thus save all three women.

The betrayal of Phileas Fogg (Farandola contro Fileas-Fogg)

Saturnino is soon fed up with country life and decides to go on a cruise along the American coast with the "Bella Leocadia". In South Milligan, plans are made to incorporate Niagara Falls into their own territory and a war begins with North Milligan.

Saturnino settles in Castropolis ("beaver town"). For a short time the southerner Phileas Fogg and Indian chief Red Bison attack the city. Saturnino is captured, but freed by the young Indian "Rising Moon". They flee together.

Meanwhile, Phileas Fogg, who has her under his control, tells Mysora about the death of her husband. He has actually joined Phileas Fogg North Milligan in revenge and has already been named Supreme General of North Milligan's Armed Forces. Phileas Fogg, in turn, is offered command of the South Milligan's army. The two armies fight, using the most modern technology such as the chloroform bomb and a pneumatic vacuum cleaner. The final fight between Saturnino and Phileas Fogg takes place in the air: Both fight against each other in hot air balloons . Saturnino is able to rescue Mysora from Phileas Fogg's balloon basket and separate the basket from the balloon, so that Phileas Fogg falls to his death.

Saturnino, Mysora and the Indian girl “Rising Moon” return on board the “Bella Leocadia” and travel to the monkey island. Here, surrounded by Saturnino's four-legged friends, they spend the rest of their lives.
