The great silence is a documentary film by the German director Philip Gröning from 2005 . The film was shown as a German contribution - out of competition - at the Venice Festival in the same year and subsequently received several awards. The premiere in Germany took place on November 10, 2005.
content
The film shows the life of the monks in the Grande Chartreuse , the mother monastery of the Carthusian order , which is located in a lonely mountain area north of Grenoble . Oriented towards the reclusive way of life of the monks, there is hardly any talk in the film; picture panels with short, descriptive biblical passages are shown repeatedly. In film music Groening waived altogether. In the entire film, only the immediate ambient noises of the scenes shown (such as the ringing of the hour bell of the monastery, the crackling of fire in the wood stove in a monk's cell and much more) can be heard, as well as the singing of the monks during the common hours of prayer and with others religious rites performed jointly or alone by them. As part of such a rite, the first spoken human word is heard in the film, after around 20 minutes of playing time.
background
Philip Gröning had the idea for this film in 1984. The prior replied to his inquiry at the time that the time was not yet ripe. It wasn't until 1999 that the director got permission to shoot. Philip Groening shot four months in the spring and summer of 2002, then three weeks in the winter of 2003. During the shooting, he lived in a cell with the Carthusians . The finished film is 169 minutes long.
Due to the restriction that he was only allowed to film in the monastery without a team, Gröning decided to combine digital recordings in HDCAM format and analog Super 8 film .
